Those of you looking for an album to soundtrack your gloomy winter, look no further than, Big Deal. The London duo released their debut album Lights Out, on Tuesday and will perform a few shows in the US this spring, including a showcase at SXSW. To say their sound is "stripped-down" would be an understatement.

Armed only with guitars and intimate lyrics, Alice Costelloe and Kacey Underwood, turn simple confessions into indie-pop gems. The innocence of Homework is a prime example that turns the intensity of new love into a debilitating disease, "Can't do my homework, can't concentrate/ It's ruining my grades, I can't think straight." While most of us have felt this anxiety at one time or another, very few could describe it in 2 and half minutes.

French duo Justice, released their video for On'n'On over the weekend. The latest single from last year's Audio, Video, Disco, is also getting remixed by a handful of artists for an EP out January 30th. Another remix out now exclusively through Beatport is Brodinski's remix with some serious vocal effects. So far no Chicago dates for Justice, which more than likely means a spot at this year's Lollapalooza. Check out the video and remix below.

The Most Anticipated Albums of 2012

Time to look forward and get excited for some major releases scheduled (or rumored) for 2012. Each artist is incredibly talented and in some cases have let their fans wait way too long for new music. By the end of the year will we be talking about how good these albums are, disappointed, or even worse, still waiting?

#10. Black Star - Aretha
The duo of Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) and Talib Kweli are rumored to release a mixtape inspired by the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. With production from Madlib and little to no material since their debut over 10 years ago, I'm sure a bunch of people are hyped for this. I posted You Already Knew back in November, here's another single, Fix Up.

#9. Van Halen - A Different Kind of Truth
I still find it unbelievable that there are people on this earth that only know the Sammy Hagar version on Van Halen. Before they sold Pepsi and blanketed the globe with Right Now, they were the definition of Rock and Roll. David Lee Roth has returned and the band is scheduled to release their first album together since 1984! Sadly, the new single Tattoo is a bit uninspired. But, the tour with two stops in Chicago is a gathering momentum.

#8. Ben Kweller - Go Fly A Kite
Ben Kweller has been releasing music since his teens and shows no sign of stopping. His fifth studio album will be released on his brand new label The Noise Company, February 7th. Spin debuted the first single this morning titled Mean to Me, head over there for a free DL. #7. Duck Sauce - TBD
It seems the duo of Armand Van Helden and A-Trak are finally set to release a full-length album, following a string of hit singles. I doubt anything will happen before this year's Winter Music Conference, so let's hope for a summer release to soundtrack your next barbeque. Check out their latest video for Big Bad Wolf, easily the video of the year.

#6. Fiona Apple - TBD
This one is purely speculation with the recent news that her album has in fact been complete for over a year. However, given her track record with her label Sony, and the labored released of 2005's Extraordinary Machine, I wouldn't hold my breath.

#5. The Shins - Port of Morrow
Despite James Mercer being the only founding member currently in the band, it seems very little has changed. The first single, Simple Song has been well-received and a slot at this year's Coachella means they should be playing most of the major festivals.

#4. Andrew Bird - Break It Yourself
It's hard to believe that Andrew Bird has released 12 albums. Even more remarkable is that they keep getting better. I thought 2007's Armchair Apocrypha was the best he could do, only to have 2009's Noble Beast blow me away. After catching him at last summer's Hideout Block Party and hearing a bit of the new material, I am counting down the days until March 6th.

Josh Homme has recently went on record saying the album is complete. So until then we just wait, and wait, and wait...

#2. Phoenix - TBD
If you were to go to Phoenix's website, you would see nothing but an image of a studio. No release date, no single, no information at all. Two years since the release of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, an album that lead to global stardom, should be more than enough time to record a proper follow up. A lot is riding on this one.

#1. Pearl Jam - TBD
Last year was all about celebrating the first 20 years, this year is about moving on. With a UK tour already booked for early summer and a reported 25-30 songs to sharpen and form, it's not if, rather when. I'd expect a late summer release and hopefully a US tour. The boys were kind enough to give a new song away for free a couple months ago. Here comes Ole!

LCD Soundsystem - Shut Up And Play The Hits Trailer

LCD Soundsystem have released the trailer for their documentary, Shut Up And Play The Hits, scheduled to premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film follows lead singer James Murphy for 48 hours, with amazing footage from their farewell show at Madison Square Garden and the immediate aftermath of calling it quits.

One of my most anticipated releases of 2012 is The Shins' Port of Morrow, available March 20th. 5 years after the release of Wincing Away The Night, James Mercer is back from his foray with Danger Mouse and Broken Bells, with the lead single, Simple Song. Among the many options for preorder is a reel-to-reel package that includes the album on tape. Not sure how many people will be able to play that, but it definitely is a new way to package an album. iTunes will also have a preorder starting tomorrow with a bonus b-side.

Star Slinger - Chain Dumbin' (ft. Juicy J, Project Pat & Reggie B)

Earlier this morning Star Slinger sent out a message from his twitter account (@starslingeruk) that said, "Spent last night mixing something that's dropping real soon! Features 2 infamous southern MC's, hold tight". 2 hours ago we got Chain Dumbin', another free track from Green Label Sound. Not exactly a remix of his single Dumbin', but built on the same foundation. To quote the man himself, "I made a new production to it, and I guess it became a whole new track rather than a remix". Whatever you want to call it, the inclusion of Juicy J and Project Pat takes this to a whole different level.

Top 10 Albums of 2011

A funny thing happened when I was thinking of this list... Everyone, and I do mean everyone jumped on the new Black Keys album, adding it to their lists despite it being out for about a week. In an attempt to listen to that album and consider it, another one fell into my lap and so we had a bit of a delay. It was worth the wait, I promise.

#10. Wye Oak - Civilian [Merge Records]
The Baltimore duo of Andy Stack and Jenn Wasner released their 3rd album in March and it was played all year long. Combining elements of Indie, Alternative, Folk and Dreampop, the album seems to grow and mutate with every listen.

#9. Common - The Dreamer/The Believer [Think Common Music]
This album was released on December 20th, I had a copy on the 14th and there is no way you can miss this album. After a few missteps, he gets back to his Chicago roots with the help of producer No ID. It's better than his classic Be, seriously.
Celebrate was played a few times on NYE.

#8. Ryan Adams - Ashes & Fire [Pax-Am Records]
In 2009 Ryan Adams announced an indefinite hiatus due to disease that has permanently affected his hearing. The chances of us ever getting another Rock N Roll are slim at best, thankfully he can still strum an acoustic guitar. Ashes & Fire might be this generation's Harvest. A little help from Benmont Tench, Norah Jones & Glyn Johns doesn't hurt either. Don't believe me? Listen to the ENTIRE album below.

This band found its way into 3 posts this year, so you hopefully already have their amazing album. No Chicago dates yet, but I'm sure they're coming. 2012 is going to be their year, I can feel it.

Beginning to end, it just flows. Not a single bad track. Wildfire was everywhere this year, but Pharaohs was just a good.

What was rumored to be a farewell to fans quickly turned into a rebirth. The boys from Omaha put out an album that seemed familiar and progressive at the same time. #4. Childish Gambino - Camp [Glassnote]
The development from his early EPs to this album is insane. Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino stepped his game up and Backpackers is a beast. Sold out show at the Riviera in March with another killer, Danny Brown.

#3. Eddie Vedder - Ukulele Songs [Monkeywrench]
Every now and then I find an album that reminds me how emotional music can be. Some artists can elaborate the ups and downs of love so remarkably it gives you comfort. Ukelele Songs joins the long list of albums that help people close a chapter in their life and start something new.

#2. Tune-Yards - WHOKILL [4AD]
The first time I head this album I was confused and a little dizzy. It felt like so many things were coming at me from every direction. A lot of artists talk about taking the harder path, Merrill Garbus actually does it. A challenging record that is well worth the reward.

The first track off this year's The Whole Love is 7 minutes of controlled chaos.I wish the final 2 minutes could go on forever.

#24. Sondre Lerche - Red Flags
Criminally overlooked and underrated, Sondre Lerche crafts amazing songs. Not a single note is wasted, and lyrically, it just seems so effortless. His album Sondre Lerche is filled with gems.

#23. A-Trak - Ray Ban Vision (Remix) [ft. Donnis, Pill, Danny Brown & Cy-Hi Da Prynce]
Two reasons this track made it. One, A-Trak is amazing. Two, Danny Brown is a beast. The newest member of the Fool's Gold family wrecked this song and then dropped XXX in case you thought he was joking.

#22. Eddie Vedder - Tonight, You Belong To Me [ft. Chan Marshall]
Fans of Steve Martin's film The Jerk will recognize this song. A playful cover with the help of Chan Marshall aka Cat Power. Ed's second solo album Ukulele Songs is exactly what it says. 16 songs with a ukulele and it became a favorite of mine, while receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album.

#21. Justice - Audio, Video, Disco (Para One Remix)
Although Justice's album Audio, Video, Disco was a bit of a disappointment, I can't blame them for trying something new. Maybe my expectations were too high, but this remix by Para One is a nice consolation.

#20. Mathieu Santos - I Can Hear The Trains Coming [FREE DOWNLOAD]
Mathieu Santos released Massachusetts 2010 earlier this year and I loved the single. Very similar to his day job as bass player for Ra Ra Riot, the album is solid. Is everyone in that band incredibly talented?

#19. Penguin Prison - The Worse It Gets (Starsmith Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
Technically, this remix came out in 2010. But, since Penguin Prison just released his debut album in October, I'll let it slide. It seemed like all summer he kept dropping a new single and a slew of remixes. I'm not complaining.

#18. Coldplay - Hurts Like Heaven
I had a few reservations about Mylo Xyloto. I saw them at the Aragon for Parachutes, at the Vic for A Rush of Blood to the Head and then it just seemed like too much. Thankfully, I can say this is better. Not great, but the best I've heard from them in years.

#17. The Rapture - How Deep Is Your Love? (A-Trak Remix)
The Rapture's In The Grace Of Your Love was a highlight of the year, with some serious dance tracks. Add A-Trak to the mix and you have a classic.

#16. Foo Fighters - White Limo
The Foo Fighters were very much like Coldplay and had to prove something to me this year. Enough of the ballads and acoustic shows, give me a rock record. Dave Grohl and company set up shop in his garage and turned up all the knobs. 6 Grammy nominations, I'd say that's a good year.

#15. Tokyo Police Club - All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem Cover)
Tokyo Police Club took cover songs to a completely different level this year, releasing 10x10x10. Ten songs, in ten days from ten years, starting with 2001. While some were forgettable (Party in the USA?), this LCD Soundsystem cover is perfect.

#14. Delorean - Stay Close (RAC Remix) [FREE DOWNLOAD]
If you read last year's list, RAC's remix of Everything You Wanted by Kele was the only remix listed. A year later, they snatch up two spots and it could have been three. Part of VOL 2, these guys are on point like no one else.

#13. Bright Eyes - Haile Selassie
As the lists start to come in, a lot of people are sleeping on Bright Eyes' The People's Key. I am not one of them. I made my first trip to NYC in March to see them at Radio City Music Hall, and saw them two more times. Everything I love about Bright Eyes is neatly packaged into one song.

#12. Beastie Boys - Make Some Noise
Last year, there was a very good possibility that we might never hear new music from the Beastie Boys. When Adam Yauch announced that he had cancer, all music including the album Hot Sauce Committee Part 2 was put on hold. Thankfully, he's on the mend, we got this jam and a hilarious video too.

#11. Radiohead - Lotus Flower
Following an 18 track double album with a concise 8 song, 38 minute album is not what I expected. But, Radiohead rarely does what people expect. A US tour in the spring is up next, get ready.

When I posted this song a few months ago, I called it the remix of the year. Somebody prove me wrong.

#6. Tune-Yards - Bizness
If not for Bon Iver, Tune-Yards would have been my album of the year. So fresh and exciting, it's charm is untouchable.

#5. Death Cab For Cutie - Stay Young, Go Dancing
Let's try for a minute to forget the absolute train wreck that was the Keys & Codes Remix EP and appreciate a really good song, from a really good album.

#4. Childish Gambino - Freaks & Geeks
Yes, he's Troy from Community. Yes, he just released a damn good album. But, this was blasting all summer for me. You can't find a better line/flow than "Nigga can't you tell that my sample of Adele was so hot I got these hood niggas blowing up my cell". Exhibit B is Backpackers (from Camp) where he is trying to hurt people.

#3. SBTRKT - Wildfire
Assist of the year goes to Yukimi Nagano of Little Dragon for making this track a killer. This is what it sounds like when planets align.

#2. Jay-Z & Kanye West - Otis
Collectively known as The Throne and currently murdering the US on tour, Jay & Ye sampled Otis Redding's Try a Little Tenderness and that's all you need to know.

#1. Bon Iver - Holocene
The play count for this song is easily over 200 and considering how much music I listen to, that is saying a lot. Very few people could follow up an album like For Emma with something better. But, Justin Vernon did just that. Every person that immediately followed him like a cult, dying to hear more music, got more than they ever expected. I used to see the line "I could see for miles, miles and miles" and think of the Who, not anymore.

Childish Gambino - Heartbeat

At least one member of the NBC sitcom Community had a good day. The same day his the sitcom was "benched", Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino released his debut album Camp on Glassnote Records. After releasing 3 albums and an EP for free, it's time to pay up. The album was previewed a week early on NPR and is getting solid reviews from pretty much everyone. What started as a sample-heavy mixtape for hipsters, he has definitely transitioned into a well-produced artist. When I first heard him on I am just a Rapper, I found the Sleigh Bells and Grizzly Bear samples a bit too reminiscent of Chiddy Bang, and quite frankly that gets old after a while. Last summer's Freaks & Geeks EP was a huge step in the right direction and a favorite of mine in 2011. Lyrically, his ability to turn words and snap one-liners is his greatest asset. He stopped by Conan last night to play Heartbeat, his second single and my favorite song on the new album. Check out the video below along with his track Break, killing Kanye's All of the Lights.

Introducing: Star Slinger

I first became aware of Star Slinger after he released a remix of Childish Gambino's Freaks & Geeks, earlier this year. The original has been on repeat since it was released, but the remix was just so different, I had to check him out. He followed that up with a massive mix for Fabric and has been on fire ever since. Despite being from Manchester, Star Slinger relies heavily on Soul samples, deep cuts that I've heard for too many years to count. On his collaboration titled Teams vs Star Slinger he samples Barbara Mason's Yes, I'm Ready with absolute precision. A track from his release Volume 1, titled Mornin' speeds up the classic Let's Do It Again by the Staple Singers and it's the illest thing I've heard in a while. He recently finished his first US tour and thankfully I caught him at Lincoln Hall. A proper debut is in the works, with the first single Dumbin' available as a free download from Green Label Sound. Normally I give you a single song or video to let the goodness sink in, but I honestly couldn't decide on just one.

Fans of Rostam Batmanglij, rejoice! The Vampire Weekend member released his second song in a little over a month, creating whispers of a solo album. The song titled Don't Let It Get To You, is everything you'd expect from him. A bit of tribal drums, cascading synths and spoken word lyrics. The electronic elements bring to mind Discovery, his other side project, a collaboration with Ra Ra Riot's Wes Miles. Justice - Audio, Video, Disco Review

Occasionally artists tell the truth. When asked about the direction the new album was taking, Xavier de Rosnay (Half of French Duo, Justice) replied "the album would have a bit more sunshine... daytime music". He wasn't lying. Fours years after their massively successful debut Cross, they are set to release Audio, Video, Disco next week. While it's bound to be compared to their first album, the new material takes a lot of risks, with results good and bad.

If you are looking for the funk and strings of DVNO, you won't find it. How about the distortion and stutter of Waters of Nazareth? Nope. A hint of D.A.N.C.E., their biggest hit? Maybe. While most of the last album was constructed on a computer, this one was created with real instruments, giving it a completely different feel. They may not be the greatest musicians, but surprisingly, it's the live tracks that show the most growth and the electro instrumentals that feel a bit stale.

Horsepower, the opening track felt wrong from the beginning. Did anyone else think they were about to hear Michael Jackson's Beat It? It's basically a drawn out intro to Civilization with the last 30 seconds sounding like something from Legends of Zelda. Civilization was supposed to a hit. Similar to D.A.N.C.E. and tied to a worldwide Adidas campaign, it's the best example of both styles working together. Lyrics have never been their strong suit and you can get away with it when you are asking people to dance the night away. But, "Beating of a million drums/The fire of a million guns/The mother of a million sons" just seems lazy and lethargic.

Thank god for On'N'On, easily the best track. It really saves the album after the average Ohio and Canon. On'N'On is fluid from beginning to end, the vocals and strings build the song properly and it gives you a brief glimpse of what might be. After such great promise and excitement, we get Brainvision which features the most guitar, albeit single-note, and little else. It's these missteps, followed by the bland Parade that frustrate me the most. They are failing where they should be succeeding. Just give me a great synth line with some energy!

Amazingly, they seem to get it together at the end. I can't say a bad thing about the final three songs. New Lands starts off by borrowing the riff from Ac/Dc's For Those About to Rock and there's nothing wrong with that. The breakdown in the middle is just enough to indulge in while resisting the temptation to make a mess of a very good song. Helix is what they do. You've got it all, stuttering vocals, great hook, focus and energy. It was originally reported that this was going to be left off the album (it was included on the Audio, Video, Disco EP), but this song restored my faith in them. While the closing track doesn't break new ground, it does give that ray of light, that peak of sunshine. I just wish it didn't take so long.

Rarely do you find a dance album that doesn't have filler, I understand that. But, the peaks and valleys of this album are so far apart that you are left with 5 good songs and 6 bad ones. It's baffling. Despite the fact that half of the album is sub par, I'm very interested to see how it works live. A new album always means a new tour and there's nothing wrong with that. The Black Keys Announce El Camino

Either The Black Keys are releasing new music or they are going to great lengths to sell a minivan. A fake ad was released on Sunday that features Bob Odenkirk attempting to sell a minivan. Maybe Akron is thin on actual El Caminos, or maybe it's another part of the joke; either way it got my attention. The clip ends with the words, "The Black Keys, El Camino, December 6". Also popping up is the site Wannabuyavan.com, which has a phone number for potential buyers. The number goes directly to a message from Patrick about the car with no mention of new music or an album. Lastly, Patrick sent out a message on Twitter yesterday to follow @WannaBuyAVan. The account is based out of Akron, Ohio and has zero tweets.

Pre-Order information is up now and the first single, Lonely Boy is due October 26th.

Introducing: ARMS

While digging around Daytrotter last year, I stumbled on to a band called ARMS. The side project of Todd Goldstein has since become his main focus following the breakup of his former band, Harlem Shakes. After hearing their new single, that doesn't seem to be a bad thing. Todd released 2009's Kids Aflame playing most of the instruments and keeping it a fairly solo project. 2010's ARMS EP was recorded with band members and the growth is evident. Heat & Hot Water is a great song built on a rumbling bass line and Todd's drawn out vocals.

My hope is that 2011 will be their breakout year, with a full album, Summer Skills due in November. The first single, Fleeced is a huge step forward with the addition of synthesizers and more energy. Fans of Local Natives or Ra Ra Riot should enjoy their ability to incorporate a lot of rhythm without losing the drive or focus of a true gem. Both the ARMS EP and Fleeced are available now for free on their Bandcamp page. With absolutely no hint of a label, these guys are doing it themselves and should be supported.

Mayer Hawthorne - The Walk

I had the pleasure of catching Chromeo last Friday at the House of Blues and the boys did not disappoint. However, it was the opening act that really impressed me. As someone who grew up on Motown and can appreciate the genius of Smokey Robinson, I am very skeptical when it comes to new R&B. Especially when it comes across as some sort "Retro/Neo-Soul" gimmick. Admittedly, when I initially heard Mayer Hawthorne and his first album, A Strange Arrangement, I dismissed it as such.

But, like so many of those hard-working Motown Revues in the 60's, Mayer Hawthorne & the County bring so much energy, it's hard not to leave a fan. His music immediately got the crowd moving and even had Jill Scott singing and dancing from the balcony. His second album, How Do You Do was released on Tuesday and his video for "The Walk" debuted a few days ago. The Night Falls Tour featuring Chromeo, Mayer Hawthorne & The County, and Sammy Bananas runs through November, so check them out.

Death Cab For Cutie released a video this week for their newest single, Stay Young, Go Dancing, my favorite song from this year's Codes & Keys. The video follows a man and woman through the years, starting as an aged couple and ending with them as children. It seems a bit too VH1 and will no doubt lead even more fans to complain about their path to "Dad Rock". But for every "New Year", they had a "I'll Follow You Into The Dark", so this really shouldn't be too much of a surprise. For some reason the line, "Lost in a maze, of a thousand rainy days" stuck with me and I'm just passing along a really good song. They are about to start a Fall tour with the closest show in Champaign, October 1st. The video was directed by Claire Carre.

It took a while, but the remix of the year has arrived. Gigamesh is a Producer/DJ from Minneapolis who is set to release the Gigamesh EP in October. For those of you that get your tunes from Beatport, they have an exclusive release on the 4th, followed by a full release on the 18th. It's good to hear that Prince isn't the only funky thing coming out of Minnesota. His stuff is heavy on synth and I'm loving the horns. RAC in typical fashion brings a little bit of flavor and make a stellar track even better. Described as "Scifi Space Disco", this is absolutely killing it right now...

It seems as though the "quiet one" has a few things to say. A new documentary directed by Martin Scorsese about George Harrison will debut in two parts, October 5th and 6th, exclusively on HBO."George Harrison: Living In The Material World" packs new interviews, videos and performances into an epic 3 1/2 hour film. I've very interested to see the second half, as the first half ends with The Beatles breakup. Aside from releasing well received solo albums, he was a member of the Traveling Wilburys, produced a Monty Python film (I had no idea) and put together the unbelievable Concert for Bangladesh. For those of you without cable, the film will be released October 10th on DVD, Blu-Ray and a Blu-Ray Deluxe Edition that includes a cd and book. Is there a better song than "Here Comes The Sun"? MSTRKRFT at the MID

In less than a year, The MID has become the spot in Chicago to see the best DJs from around the world. I have personally been there for sets from A-Trak, Green Velvet and most recently, MSTRKRFT. JFK played one of the first shows there in January, and this time showed up with Al-P for an official Lollapalooza after party. The venue is tight, maxing at 800 with the main dance floor sharing space with booths that offer table service. The stage is so small, that A-Trak couldn't even fit his most recent setup (check it here) when he played there in May. If you want the theatrics, maybe you should check acts out at the Congress. If you want a sweaty mess of a night, get here, immediately. Upcoming events include The Twelves, Questlove, Crookers & SBTRKT.

Lollapalooza Week - Foo Fighters

My biggest complaint about Lolla's lineup this year is the horrible choices for headliners. It seems like they regularly only have 1 or 2 bands that interest me over the entire weekend and out of this year's choices, I only want to see the Foo Fighters. So far it's been a pretty good year for the guys with the release of Wasting Light and a career-spanning documentary, Back and Forth. One of the main reasons they continue to have so much success is due to the fact that they really do try and reach the fans. Before the release of their new album, they played secret shows throughout California and then went out the "Garage" tour, where they played 5 garages in the US. I've seen them many times, expect a ton of energy and all the hits. Fuck Deadmau5, Cold War Kids & Kid Cudi, you better be at the Music Unlimited stage Sunday night.A dug pretty deep for some nice tracks, download and thanks for reading. Lollapalooza Week - Death From Above 1979

Death From Above 1979 is proof that all you need is one, great album. The Canadian Electro/Punk duo released one album, You're a Woman, I'm a Machine in 2004 and set the bar pretty high. I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that they blurred the lines enough to make Punk danceable, and Electro dirty. A brief 2 years later, the band had broken up and moved on to other projects. Jesse F. Keeler is currently one half of MSTRKRFT and Sebastien Grainger went on to release solo albums. As abruptly as they announced their demise, they reunited this year with a riot-inducing set at SXSW, and a prime slot at Coachella. Catch them tonight at the Metro for a SOLD OUT pre-Lolla show, or on Saturday, 4pm on the Bud Light stage.

Lollapalooza Week - Bright Eyes

Riding the wave of a critically-acclaimed album and an amazing tour, Bright Eyes show no signs of stopping. Prior to the release of this year's The People's Key, Conor Oberst had hinted the end was near. But if you have either heard the album or caught them on tour, you can easily see they are firing on all cylinders. Just last month, they added a West coast leg to the tour and I am so happy they are making their first appearance at Lollapalooza. That is not a typo or misinformation, this is the first time they will enjoy Grant Park and all its beauty. I hope I see the entire city of Chicago at the Bud Light Stage, Friday at 6:30. The video is for their newest single, Jejune Stars and the audio is a bonus song from 2007's Cassadaga.

Lollapalooza Week - The Bloody Beetroots

The best thing about The Bloody Beetroots is that they are constantly getting better. Starting off as a DJ duo, they more than held their own at Perry's Tent in 2009. Their brand of aggression and punk seemed like a distant cousin to Boys Noize and MSTRKRFT who followed them. As the remixes seemed to pile up for The Chemical Brothers, Shitdisco and Micky Green to name a few, the crowds increased as well. Choosing to assemble a live band and create Death Crew 77 was exactly what the fans wanted. I had a chance to catch them at Lincoln Hall last year and I was blown away. I'm almost hesitant to even put up a sample of their music because their live set is completely different. So let's give another group some love and consider this a 2 for 1. The song is Awesome off their album Romborama and features Chicago's own Cool Kids. For a fresher look, check out the videos and prepare for a sweaty, exhausting mess... The Bloody Beetroots will destroy Perry Stage on Friday at 5pm. The Cool Kids were a late addition and are at Perry's Stage on Sunday at 3.

Lollapalooza Week - Local Natives

For the next 5 days, I'll post a video or song from a band I refuse to miss at this year's Lollapalooza. I wish I could say that I am thrilled with the lineup, but it's ok, I guess. If you've been reading my posts, you might be able to predict the next 5 days, so I'll try to give you a demo or acoustic version for your trouble.

Local Natives is a really good band out of California, that isn't afraid to represent the West coast. They have been compared to Vampire Weekend, due to their Afro-Pop and World beats. But, I enjoy them because of their harmonies and subtle textures. Where most bands from the East coast tend to be more aggressive, Local Natives allow the song to expand and never seem in a hurry. Pick up 2010's Gorilla Manor and check them out Saturday at 5:30 on the Sony stage.

Pearl Jam Twenty Trailer and Screenings

Pearl Jam finally released the trailer for the career-spanning documentary, Pearl Jam Twenty. Directed by Cameron Crowe and filled with ultra rare footage, it is not to be missed. There will also be a soundtrack and book to accompany the film. The band announced today that they will have a one day national screening across North America on September 20th. Chicago details are TBD. This looks awesome...

Kanye West & Jay-Z - Otis

Now this is more like it. Yesterday the second track from the upcoming album "Watch The Throne", a collaborative effort from Jay-Z & Kanye West was leaked. Simply titled "Otis" and sampling Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness", it's good to see Ye bringing back the soul samples. From "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" sampling the Jackson 5, to "Through the Wire" with a sped up Chaka Khan hook, Kanye makes classics from classic songs. Would Common's "Be" even exist without all the samples on that album? I don't know where they have this album locked up, but with less than 2 weeks until its scheduled release, they are doing a great job of enticing fans and avoiding a leak.

The Avett Brothers - The Once & Future Carpenter

I'll admit it, I got into The Avett Brothers very late. If you were a fan prior to 2009, I will be very impressed. Despite limited airplay, their album I and Love and You peaked at #16 on the Billboard chart and found its way to a lot of year end "best of" lists, thanks in part to the beautiful title track. The folk/bluegrass group from North Carolina has actually released 7 full length albums since 2000 and has built a strong following from constant touring and word of mouth. Some of those words found there way to producer Rick Rubin and attention followed. He signed them to his American Recordings label and produced their last album and follow up, scheduled for release in late 2011/early 2012.

While recording a show for CMT's Unplugged series, they debuted a new song, "The Once & Future Carpenter". The entire episode is available online, please check it out. The second video below is a favorite of mine, giving you a prime example of their energy, style and most importantly, lyrical content. They will be in town for a SOLD OUT show at the Aragon, September 30th.

The White Stripes - I've Been Loving You Too Long

Yesterday was a good day. The latest installment (#8) in Third Man Records' Vault subscription arrived and one of the highlights was The White Stripes' cover of the Otis Redding classic, I've Been Loving You Too Long. For those of you not familiar with the vault, it is a chance to get some extremely limited items from the entire Third Man Records roster. Previous installments have included live albums from The Dead Weather, The Raconteurs and of course, The White Stripes. Occasionally, you may get a shirt or poster. But, the real gems are the 7" records that these guys dig deep for and painstakingly produce for members only. Installment #7 came with a tri-color reproduction of the out of print single, Party of Special Things to Do. It's gorgeous.

I wish I had joined sooner, as I have already missed out on a "Hello Operator" picture disc and a companion piece to "Under Great White Northern Lights". Buyer beware, this is not a cheap membership. Members will pay $60, four times a year, to receive quarterly installments that are announced with enough notice to allow you to join or cancel your membership. Other perks include a dedicated site with videos and occasional live shows. Plus, special offers on merchandise and presales for upcoming concerts. Information is posted for #9, which seems to be heavy on the timeless, Wanda Jackson.

This most recent installment contained 3 separate White Stripes items: A dvd recorded in 2000 just after the release of De Stijl, a double LP of the White Stripes final show and a 7" from 1997, only 2 months after the band was formed! I immediately gravitated to the 7" because I love Otis Redding and hearing Jack & Meg play this was worth every penny. On the a-side is another cover of "Signed DC", originally recorded by the band Love. The live dvd titled "Under Moorhead Lights All Fargo Night" is a very rough and grainy view of the band before true popularity caught them. Playing at Ralph's Corner Bar with a hoarse throat, the band looks so innocent. The part when Jack introduces Meg as his "little sister" to a crowd of 20 people made me laugh. It was still so new and honest. The double LP simply titled "Live in Mississippi" is an absolute treasure. Recorded July 31st, 2007, it is the last show they ever played and they just crush it. All six of their releases are represented, as well as a couple of Robert Johnson covers and a Son House's "Death Letter". Listening to the show, you just shake your head in disbelief that they will never play again after displaying so much talent.

Ray LaMontagne & the Pariah Dogs came to town on Tuesday, playing their brand of folk music before a sold out crowd at Pritzker Pavilion. Despite temperatures near 95 degrees, the band endured oppressive heat to deliver an evening filled with fan favorites and a couple of covers. The 18-song setlist, comprised mostly of their latest release God Willin’ & the Creek Don’t Rise, gave the audience a chance to see them stretch out some songs and inject energy into others.

As he casually walked onto the stage for a solo performance of “Like Rock & Roll Radio”, the harmonica never sounded so worn or beaten. One of my favorites off the new album, it really displayed the simplicity of his work. The band joined in the fun, particularly on “Repo Man”, one of the few upbeat songs played. One of his earliest hits “Shelter” was accompanied by a great slide guitar, giving it a bit more depth, if not some new life.

As much as I enjoy the new album, I was really hoping for some new music. The middle part of the show was identical to last year’s tour, aside from a cover of the Byrd’s “Blue Canadian Rockies”. Also, there was not a single song from his second album, Til The Sun Turns Black. By the time he got to “Trouble” & “Jolene” later in the evening, the crowd was anxious and appreciative. After a brief break, the show ended with a 2-song encore of “Let It Be Me” and “All the Wild Horses”. They are touring all summer, so please check them out. Also, if you are interested in concert posters, they have 50 autographed posters at each show, so get there early.

For whatever reason, I really seem to neglect this project. That being said, I am actually through the letter J. I just find it so hard to pick the actual artists that make it to these posts. On a happier note, one of the bands featured in the letter D, Death From Above 1979 has reunited and it feels so good. Maybe they saw the post and immediately felt compelled to play again, I'd like to think so...

This was actually a very easy letter to complete, filled with one-hit wonders and established artists. On the other hand, it left me with very little to choose from. One band is relatively new and another I've listened to all my life.

The Eagles of Death Metal initially started as a duo and side project for Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. While Josh played the role of primitive drummer (and that is putting it mildly), Jesse Hughes assumed both guitar and vocal responsibilities. The result is a mix of dirty riffs, cymbal crashing drums and cocky lyrics. At times it can be very one-dimensional, but when that one dimension has the knob cranked to 11, you can't help but feel the energy. Although, they have released 3 albums (Peace, Love, Death Metal; Death By Sexy & Heart On), the band has rarely played together. In fact, the touring band is a 4-piece with Jesse being the only founding member. With Josh's commitment to Queens of the Stone Age (currently touring), and the formation of Them Crooked Vultures, little time has been spent on this project and it's apparent with each new release. There are currently no plans to record a 4th album.

Elvis Costello is the epitome of Pop. I'm constantly amazed by the amount of people that think he stopped making music in the 80's. In fact, I can't think of another artist that has continued to put out albums on a regular basis for so long. 30 albums since his classic debut, My Aim Is True in 1977 with no more than 3 years between releases. That's impressive. Growing up I heard the obvious hits: Alison, Radio Radio, Everyday I Write The Book and caught a few videos. But, I didn't take interest until I heard "Miracle Man" in the Godfather, Part 3. I still remember humming the tune throughout the movie so I could figure out who actually sang the song.

Even if you stopped paying attention to his musical talents; I hope you didn't miss his short-lived show, Spectacle: Elvis Costello with... The talk show invited some amazing guests to talk about the music industry and perform. My favorite episode was with Smokey Robinson, check it out on demand. Elvis is currently on tour and if you look at his site, you will get a brief taste of "The Wheel". Every night he spins a wheel and plays whatever comes up. Not a bad idea for a man that has so many songs to choose from. The video below is a nice jab at his first appearance on SNL. When asked to fill in for the scheduled guests, the Sex Pistols, he was asked to play "Less Than Zero", despite wanting to play "Radio Radio". After a few bars of "Less Than Zero", he stopped and apologized on live television before breaking into "Radio Radio". The rest is history. Thankfully, the Beastie Boys were watching and invited him back for their show.

Bon Iver - Calgary

Bon Iver released the single Calgary this afternoon, and I had to pass it on. All indications have been that the new album, titled Bon Iver and available June 21st, will have a bit more energy. I love the new sound. He's using more instruments, definitely plugging in and bringing some of the effects he incorporates into his live sets to a studio album. But, let's be honest, the voice is still magnificent and that break at the end where you get him at his clearest sounds like a long, lost friend. Sondre Lerche - Domino Video

I almost feel like I should apologize for not posting something sooner about Sondre Lerche. The guy has made phenomenal music for over a decade and is showing no signs of stopping. The Norwegian singer/songwriter is releasing his self-titled album on June 7th and just debuted a video for the single, Domino. The first time I heard Stupid Memory from 2004's Two Way Monologue, I immediately recognized his talent to craft pop songs with beautiful arrangements. If you were to listen to his entire catalog, you would find elements of Bossa Nova, Jazz, Folk and Rock. He gained some popularity in 2007 when he composed the soundtrack for Dan In Real Life, even making a cameo in the final wedding scene. Pick up any album and I guarantee you will not be disappointed. In support of the new album, he will play back to back nights at Schubas and Lincoln Hall in mid-June. SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC.

Coming to a theater near you...

Apparently, musicians have more to say than what is recorded in the studio. Beginning this Friday, three major acts will release documentaries to tell the story of their band. If you listen to some of the reviews, these 3 films are not to be missed.

The Foo Fighters are set to release "Back and Forth" in a limited screening tonight, followed by a 3D concert where they will play their new album, Wasting Light in its entirety. Sadly, the closest showing was in Dekalb, IL; so I'm missing it. However, for readers with the cable channel Palladia, they will premiere it this Friday. The trailer looks like it could really get into some dark material, unusual territory for a good time having band. In fact, drummer Taylor Hawkins recently said he would prefer the film not be released. In a recent interview with NME he said, "I wish we wouldn't put the fucking movie out to be honest because I'm not really comfortable with the public sort of openness... We almost broke up and I almost died and all those crazy things have happened. And that's what people want".

The Kings of Leon released a trailer today for their film, Talihina Sky, which will premiere at this year's Tribeca Film Festival. For those of you not familiar with the Followill's upbringing, their father was a Pentecostal preacher and let's just say; the boys strayed from the pack a little bit. The film includes home movies, concert footage and more than a few shots of their well-known debauchery. Watch the incredibly honest scene where their father stops just short of saying they are going to hell.

Probably the most anticipated film for me is PJ20, the Cameron Crowe directed film commemorating Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary. The band has not issued a trailer or release date, but rumors have it debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival later this year. Guitarist Mike McCready uploaded a 30 second segment on to the band's Youtube channel, and that's about it. Although, bassist Jeff Ament recently mentioned that he was amazed at all the early footage in the film, adding "I don't even remember cameras being around for some scenes". As soon as I get a trailer, it'll be posted. I promise.

Death Cab For Cutie - You Are A Tourist

My very first post was about Death Cab For Cutie's Open Door Ep. In fact, it was 2 years ago today! Damn, I can't believe I've been doing this for 2 years already. If you haven't heard they will be releasing a new album titled Codes and Keys on May 31st. The first single "You Are A Tourist" has been released and you can give it a listen below (via Atlantic Records).

The guys sent out an email today asking fans to visit YOUAREATOURIST.COM on Tuesday, April 5th at 6pm CST for what is being described as the "First Live, Scripted, One-Take Music Video Shoot. Ever". They also are playing a series of small clubs, including a sold out show at The Metro. Bright Eyes - March 15, 2011 at the Riviera

When Conor Oberst announced he was moving pass the moniker Bright Eyes and issued his self-titled debut, I was a bit confused. I mean, Bright Eyes is Conor, quite similar to Trent Reznor and his band Nine Inch Nails. Over the years he definitely had help creating those albums, but what would Bright Eyes be without him? The answer is a duo. As critics and blogs heaped on the praise and crowned him the new Dylan, two key components were overlooked: Nate Walcott & Mike Mogis. Truth be told, if you caught Bright Eyes before I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, you might not even recognize this band.

As each album progressed, more and more instruments and genres were explored. I often attributed that to Conor leaving Omaha, living in New York and traveling the world on his many tours. On stage, you get a very different answer. You get a band that really is great and when together, unstoppable. The constant rumor that this is in fact the final album and tour was swirling around the crowd with fans hoping for a certain song (I was praying for "Going For The Gold"). If this is the last go around, they are having a blast doing it.

The opener Firewall was one of the eight new songs played, but in a set of 24, there was plenty of time for a bit of everything. Walking onto the stage as the opening narrative played, they began a marathon of favorites with minimal crowd interaction, but plenty of energy. The first highlight/surprise was "Take It Easy (Love Nothing)", a track that probably couldn't be fleshed out with his previous shows. Nate Wolcott, sitting behind a stack of synthesizers and horns really showcased his talents as the staggering keys and beeps drove the crowd into a frenzy.

A favorite of mine "Cleanse Song" had Mike Mogis playing a beautiful slide guitar that was as clear as a bell while Conor swayed with the crowd. It brought a smile to my face. Another song that found rebirth was "Falling Out of Love at This Volume", a song written in 1995 and almost as old as the 18+ crowd.

The 3-song sequence of "Beginner's Mind", "Bowl Of Oranges" & "Poison Oak" would have been enough for me to call the night a success as they found their folk side. Lyrically I couldn't ask for more honesty than lines like "stay awhile, my inner child/ I'd like to learn your tricks/know what makes you tick/nurse you when you're sick" or the welcomed sadness of "well, I don't think I ever loved you more/than when you turned away/when you locked the door/when you stole the car/and drove towards Mexico". How can such a sad song be so damn good?

"Lua" was played especially slow with an acoustic guitar and a whimpering horn. "Road to Joy" should have been the closer, with so much built up tension and those fantastic words "let's fuck it up boys/make some noise!". Instead "One for You, One for Me" was the last song played, ending much like the new album, only much, much louder... MSTRKRFT - Beards Again

I have to admit, when Death From Above 1979 announced they were playing Coachella and additional dates, I really wondered what would come of MSTRKRFT. With little to no output since 2009's Fist of God and very few shows, I really thought they would get lost. Add to that a solo set by Al-P at Spybar and a JFK show at The MID, and you have a duo that isn't really hitting the scene that hard. Thankfully, the guys dropped a new song this week titled Beards Again and I love it. Gone is the fuzzed out bass, replaced with a building guitar and drums. Could they be taking a cue from Death Crew 77? I want more... Download it for free at the band's site.

Junip - In Every Direction Video and Ep

Junip just released an Ep & video for their great song, In Every Direction. The Ep features remixes from Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr & Morgan Kibby of M83 aka White Sea, along with three new songs. You can preview one of the tracks on their Soundcloud player, an instrumental titled Nackrosdammen. In even better news, they will be making their way back to Chicago for a show at the Empty Bottle, April 23rd. If you follow me at all, you know I have been praising their release Fields for a while and even reviewed their show at Lincoln Hall. Please pick up the new release or get a ticket.

The Foo Fighters have announced their 7th album will be titled Wasting Light and released on April 12th. The boys have been busy lately, playing the entire album at tiny clubs in the LA area. Dave Grohl brought in Butch Vig to produce the new record and has said it's the "heaviest album they have ever made". Need some proof? Check out the video for "White Limo", a thrashing song that sounds more like Queens of the Stone Age than anything the Foo have put out in years...

Bright Eyes - The People's Key

Tomorrow Bright Eyes will release their 7th studio album, The People's Key. I'll admit, when I first heard A Collection of Songs... over a decade ago I would have never guessed they would make it this far. Since then, Conor Oberst has built quite a following with his ability to turn 3 minutes into a story. Lyrically, The People's Key is as good as it gets, which should be expected. However, it's the textures and production that make this their best album yet.

Many artists do not have the luxury to mature in today's declining industry. In fact, very few would be releasing a 7th album without ever producing a hit single. But with Saddle Creek Records, a label founded by Oberst and others, there has never been a demand for anything but good music. As you listen to the album, you can't help but notice elements from almost every previous release. All the comforts, the nuances that made songs unforgettable, they all find their way into a confident and mature record.

Continuing the tradition of opening with a narrative, we find ourselves listening to Denny Brewer as "Firewall" builds in the background. If Cassadaga was someone lost and looking for answers; The People's Key is the guiding light. It doesn't matter what you believe or who you think is in charge, everyone needs to hear that "love has always been the message".

For those of you looking for a folk record, it never appears. Well, maybe at the end. Instead the album in general is very upbeat using synthesizers to add energy and pop. "Jejune Stars" with the great line "Come fire, come water, come karma, we're all in transition" has a keyboard solo, something I cannot wait to see live. Look no further than "Triple Spiral" with clapping drums and busy keys for a glimpse at how far they've come.

"The Beginner's Mind" begins and ends with an acoustic guitar, working so well to show you the simplicity and bare bones of the album. "Ladder Song" is even more stark, a piano ballad reminiscent of "Breezy". Lastly, "One For You, One For Me" could easily be a hidden track from Digital Ash in a Digital Urn. The constant loop had me thinking of "Easy/Lucky/Free" and that's not a bad thing.

In all the interviews I read about this release, I kept hearing about "space" and leaving room "to breathe". How some albums had been "left too long in the oven" or might have been too monotonous. Very few bands with such an adoring fan base would even admit to such mistakes or go over critically acclaimed albums for errors. But these guys did and it pays off. Bright Eyes will play a SOLD OUT show at The Riv, March 15th.

As we come to the end of January, it seems like 2011 is up and running. But even with everyone putting out a "best of" list, it's easy to overlook a few good bands. So before you start searching for the next big thing, check out these 3 that you might have missed...

If you haven't seen Freelance Whales in Chicago, you haven't been looking. The band played local venues 7 times in 2010 while supporting their debut album, Weathervanes. I caught them at the Metro last year as the opening act for Tokyo Police Club and immediately focused in on the instruments and layers they present. My favorite track is the hazy "Ghosting", but you really can't go wrong with anything on the album.

If you are wondering where all the women have gone, start listening to The Mynabirds. Laura Burhenn and a handful of guests made What We Lose In The Fire We Gain In The Flood a classic that ends up elegant and worn at the same time. Fans of Cat Power or Fiona Apple should take a listen to a voice that sounds as soulful as anything released in the last decade. If you are lucky enough to have a ticket to the sold out Bright Eyes show, come early as Laura and company are the opening act.

Any band that uses a cow bell is fine by me. Free Energy released Stuck On Nothing last year and I just found it infectious. The same way you blast Cheap Trick every time it comes on the radio, these guys make fun rock. Upbeat and filled with enough power chords to turn any event into a party, press play and turn it up!

I am constantly fighting technology, or at least delaying it. When I was in college, I bought every CD that was released from my favorite bands, with a collection growing well over 1,500. Before that, I bought tapes and I'm even old enough to have received Guns N' Roses "Appetite for Destruction" on vinyl for Christmas. To be frank, I hate MP3 is his smug cousin FLAC.

That being said, a ton of artist are embracing technology and getting music out faster than ever. In the past week, Best Coast, Dashboard Confessional and a few others have given away songs. New songs, for free.

Chris Carrabba followed a tweet on the 13th about "working on some tunes", with another message on the 14th simply stating, "Just Recorded This...". The song titled, A Guardian of Sorts (To Catch You) is available now using the widget below. As he finishes up his 10 year anniversary tour of The Swiss Army Romance, it's good to hear something so raw. Weezer came to town last week as part of their Memories Tour, playing the Blue Album on Friday and the incredible Pinkerton on Saturday. As much as I would have loved to make it to both shows, I had to make a choice. I have regrets, we all do. But, I'll never regret missing the first night for what was an amazing second night.

So many people have called Pinkerton the blueprint for Emo. I don't care about its merits to the younger generation, I had this fucker on cassette. Hearing the complete album would have been enough for me, but they really showcased the entire catalog and broke out some serious treats. For some reason I was under the impression that they would open with the full album and then play a mix of their songs to end the night. Instead Rivers and crew jumped in their "time machine" and treated fans to hits off every album starting with Hurley. You literally felt like you were looking through a year book, or walking through your old gym.

As I watched them on stage, I couldn't help but notice the confidence the band had. For all the anxiety and nervous tension we've heard about throughout the years, they looked stronger than ever. Brian Bell never left his spot on the left side of the stage, instead bouncing with the swagger of a millionaire. If Pinkerton was their puberty, these guys decided to kick in the doors of their class reunion. "Dope Nose" was a highlight of the first set, along with the rarity "You Gave Your Love To Me Softly".

If I told you that every song in the second set was great, would you believe me? In high school, I loved "Across The Sea", but to hear it live was something I'll never forget. "El Scorcho" got the biggest cheer, a sing-along that even impressed the band. When the closing song "Butterfly" finished it was definitely too soon. The night seemed to fly by like most great nights do. Thanks Weezer for giving me and a sold out crowd what they wanted, a chance to catch up with old friends.

As a Christmas gift to you, I present my top 10 songs of the year. Most of them should have caught your ear, but that doesn't mean you necessarily bought them. Have no fear, all 10 are available for download right here. This year was a big step up for the blog and I couldn't have done it without the support and encouragement of a lot of people. #10. Beach House - Zebra
A funny thing happened this year, I actually met a band. Over the years I've been fortunate to meet a few people after a show, waiting with random fans at a side door or bus. But, never was I invited back stage or allowed to have a drink with them, until Beach House. The Baltimore duo put out a fantastic album this year and Zebra was the highlight. Thank you, thank you, thank you to Alex and Victoria.

#9. Vampire Weekend - Giving Up The Gun
I have to wonder; would this song be as great without the video? Probably. Contra in every aspect was a step forward for them. I can't wait to hear what's next.

#8. Broken Social Scene - All to All (DJ Mom Jeans Remix)
I feel it is not only acceptable to put a remix on this list, but absolutely necessary. It seemed everywhere you looked, a new band was dishing out remixes. I'll be honest, I've listened to this song so much, I don't even remember what the original sounds like. I don't think that was the point.

#7. The National - Bloodbuzz Ohio
If there was an award for best drums in a song, this would win. I love the beat, it's almost begging the rest of the band to run. They don't, and I doubt they ever will.

#6. Shout Out Louds - 1999
Give it up for Sweden! You'll find fellow Swedes Junip, in my top 5 albums of the year and now this perfect gem that easily got lost in the shuffle this year. Check out the full album Work.

#5. LCD Soundsystem - Dance Yrself Clean
Word of advice, it's supposed to start off very low. I don't know how many times I play this for someone and they say "I can't hear it. Turn it up". James Murphy and Co. know what they are doing. Everyone makes a 9 minute track that doesn't start to break until the 3 minute mark. Duh.

Speechless, seriously.

#3. Kele - Everything You Wanted (RAC Remix)
I feel like this should be a shared spot. Yes, Kele left Bloc Party and released his solo album, The Boxer. But RAC (Remix Artist Collective) did what they always do, created an awesome remix. Head to their page for remixes for Tokyo Police Club, Ra Ra Riot, U2 and Radiohead to name a few.

#2. Cee-Lo - Fuck You
If there is anyone in the world that can make anger and pain sound like a toe tapping Motown classic, it's Cee Lo. Hands down the best pop song of the year.

#1. Kanye West - Runaway (ft Pusha T)
Number one album, number one song. As he handed away half of his record for free, the early version of Runaway was already a standout track. The final version, a full 9 minutes in length gives you all the emotion you can handle. The distorted last 3 minutes still kill me.

The Best Albums of 2010

Last year I literally waited until December 31st to post my top 5 albums, but I have to say this year was less gut-wrenching. As I reflect on the year, I'm amazed that my scope is just getting bigger and bigger without losing my pop sensibility. When I started this blog, I just wanted to turn people on to good music, no matter the artist or genre. If this list doesn't prove that, nothing will...

#5. Kings Of Leon - Come Around Sundown
The Followill clan had a pretty tough act to follow with the massive success of Only By The Night. However, instead of pleasing the older fans and returning to their rock roots or making another top 40 album for the new fans and cash; they did neither. Maybe they have enough money, or don't really feel the need to prove their success, but these guys made a great album seem effortless. There are no anthems, no dirty late night rockers, just a seamless album that show yet another side of this talented band. When everyone was going for lo-fi this year, this was an album that was meant to be heard, clearly and confidently.

#4. A-Trak - Dirty South Dance 2
A few years ago Billboard named Diplo's Never Scared mix as one of their top ten albums of the year. At the time it was a bold move, especially since Diplo was fairly unknown. But it taught me something. The value of production, mixing and accessibility. DJ are the new (or maybe they always have been) litmus test. If they can get an entire room moving and dancing with a wide array of obscure tracks and remixes, who's to say that isn't a talent worth recognizing. A-Trak gave this away for free and it has not faded or stopped banging since this summer. Blending hip hop vocals and electronic beats isn't anything new. But to hear the mix, the energy and the skills; he simply made a classic.

#3. Junip - Fields
The Swedish trio have been all over my blog this year, so I hope you took notice. I gave you a track from the Black Refuge Ep and reviewed their Chicago show as well. I was glad to see them showing up on a few best of lists, because it sadly went under the radar this year. I joked that it took them 10 years to make a proper debut album, but I'd wait another decade for something this good. You know you have a great album when every time you listen to it, you finish with a new favorite song. Is it the keys in "Rope & Summit", the lyrics of "In Every Direction" or that damn bottle in "Howl"? It's pretty much everything.

#2. LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening
I recently read an article where James Murphy said "When people call us 'electronic', it makes me want to pull my eyeballs out... Disco is dance music, and disco was played by bands". This entire year when people asked me to describe LCD, I was at a lost for words, often comparing them to the Talking Heads. But, I knew it. They were making disco, and I was too afraid to even utter the words out of my mouth. Honestly, who listens to disco? Even better, who admits to making disco music? This talented band does and if you aren't embarrassed to be dancing and bobbing your head, please pick this up.

#1. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
This album is without a doubt, a game changer. I simply refuse to hate on this guy. There is a reason he's getting 5 star reviews and on most, if not all best of lists. We always knew he was a great producer, and most of his albums leaned heavy on beats. But, this time around Kanye pushed aside his ego and brought honesty and emotion to a hip hop album like no one has ever done before. You want a hit? Blast "All of the Lights". You want soul? Try "Devil in a New Dress". A hip hop summit? Throw on "Monster. A classic? Toast them assholes on "Runaway". How about a laugh? "Who the fuck got your pussy all reupholstered?". Kanye West is a bad dude.

Ad Nauseum: Black Friday Edition

This year I braved the weather and crowds on Black Friday. Yes, that horrible day when people turn into animals for a $5 blender or a $200 flat screen. For those of you that say; "you can save so much money", I think my time is worth more than sitting in the freezing cold just to save a few bucks. God bless ya for doing it, but I'll pass. Unless of course there is limited edition vinyl to be purchased and a great opportunity to help local record shops.

This year the fine folks at Record Store Day decided if you were hellbent on spending money, why not spend it on records. Releasing roughly 100 records from a wide array of artists, I have to say it looks like it was a huge success. Two hours after the stores opened, most of the limited editions are sold out and popping up on ebay. Here are a few that forced me out of bed this morning.

1. The Gaslight Anthem - Tumbling Dice 7"
The New Jersey punks really did their best to offer fans and collectors something great. Side A is of course a cover of The Rolling Stones classic "Tumbling Dice" with a new song "She Loves You" on the B side. That alone would motivate some people to get it, but the packaging is very cool. A silk-screened jacket that folds out, completely encasing the record with an included digital copy. Even better is the fact that they are releasing four colors (baby blue, white, black & brown) with matching jacket. You want the white album, buy the white jacket. I chose baby blue and couldn't be happier. Making sure fans get a hold of this seems to be the #1 priority as this release is not limited and will continue based on demand. You could easily get all four, for about $24 and skip them vultures on ebay. Well done guys... Normally I'd give you a download, but I'm going to force you to buy this one.

2. Jimi Hendrix - Merry Christmas & Happy New Year
I'm a sucker for colored vinyl, I'll admit it. Throw it on a 10" and I will most likely buy it. So Jimi's limited holiday release on green vinyl was a must have. As Jimi prepared for a holiday set at the Fillmore East in NYC, he recorded this medley of "Little Drummer Boy/Silent Night/Auld Lang Syne" with his trio the Band of Gypsys. On this release you get an edited version and extended version along with "Three Little Bears". "Three Little Bears" was originally cut during the Electric Ladyland sessions, but didn't make the album. This year it finds it's way back to America for the first time in over 20 years.

3.U2 - Wide Awake in Europe
Apparently U2 is still a pretty big fucking deal. This 3 track live ep is already on ebay for $80 and sold out in minutes everywhere I went this morning. In fact, my normal spot didn't even get a single copy shipped to them. Limited to 5000 copies and only available in the US, if you have one of these consider yourself lucky. The lead track "Mercy" is unreleased and has only been played during the recent European leg of the 360 tour. "Moment of Surrender " & "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" are the two other live tracks making this a must have for U2's obsessive and loyal fans.

I bet you thought this was over. That somehow I had been humbled by my music library (27,00 songs and growing), and given up on such a daunting task. Hell no. If you have been reading this for a while, you'll notice a few upgrades, a few tweaks here and there. Well those things take time and now that I can honestly say I am proud of what I'm doing here, we shall continue. Also, I already finished E and am just about to close up F, so these should start rolling in...

My first artist could actually show up in 4 different letters. How cool is that? Most people know about him, but do you know the real Dave Grohl? Yes, he was the drummer in Nirvana. Yes, he is the lead singer of the Foo Fighters. But this guy is a lot more than that. We won't even mention his contribution to Queens of The Stone Age's Songs For The Deaf, or how he got John Paul Jones to start rocking again with Them Crooked Vultures. But I have to ask; have you ever heard of Late!? Late! is Dave's alter ego. Pocketwatch was recorded during downtime in Virginia in '91 and released on cassette for indie label Simple Machines, these songs may have given him the courage to become the superstar he is today. In fact, one of those songs "Marigold" even made it's way on to a Nirvana import single. I listen to every now and then and laugh at how simple it all seemed to be. I don't blame you for not knowing the sheer enjoyment of "Just Another Story About Skeeter Thompson". Now, if you have actually heard the score to Touch, I'll be impressed. The movie was released in '97, and I have no idea what it's about. What I do know is that Dave Grohl composed the score and it is the only piece of material that bears his actual name.

There are days when I wish the world was ready for Death From Above 1979, but you already missed them. The Toronto punk duo released their only album You're a Woman, I'm a Machine in 2004 and broke up 2 years later. Thankfully both members have continued to release music. Jesse F. Keeler a.k.a. JFK is half of MSTRKRFT and Sebastien Grainger has released 2 albums on Saddle Creek Records, and most recently a killer remix of Broken Social Scene's "All to All". If you like the live version on "Romantic Rights" below, you should also check out their Remix/B-Sides album, Romance, Bloody Romance.

Depeche Mode may be the starting point of alternative music for me. I was in 4th grade when Violator came out, and I've been listening ever since. One of the reasons I have complied so much music over the years is because I am loyal. Sometimes, to a fault. I'll admit that the recent stuff (Exciter,Playing the Angel & Sounds of the Universe) isn't as good as the early albums. But, one of the best shows I've ever seen was during the Singles Tour, beginning to end they played every song I grew up with. I hope you have a band that you grow old with, I have a few. They just released a DVD/CD combo which documents a 2-night stand in Barcelona. Like a fool, I'm sure I'll get the blu-ray. Check out the trailer below.

Junip, November 6th at Lincoln Hall

When I first heard Junip’s debut album “Fields”, I wanted more. The Swedish trio (Jose Gonzalez, Tobias Winterkorn & Elias Araya) have a rare talent of allowing a song to build without ever setting it loose. Their brand of fuzzed out folk might be based on Jose Gonzalez’s gentle voice and nylon strings, but it’s surprisingly Winterkorn’s synthesizer and Araya’s rhythms that supply the warmth and body. Take a listen to the album; the meandering keys at the beginning of “Rope & Summit” or the bottle tapping throughout “Howl”. These little nuances make Junip a band, one that expanded their sound Saturday night at Lincoln Hall.

Opening their 13 song set with back to back upbeat favorites “Rope & Summit” & “Sweet & Bitter”, Junip set the tone early for a great show. Taking the stage as a 5-piece band which included a bass player and percussionist, they easily filled the packed room with unbelievable sound and clarity. Even when they slowed it down for “Tide”, they managed to keep the crowd’s attention and never seemed in a hurry to play something faster. I’ve seen bands go to great lengths, sandwiching a slow song between 4 or 5 hits to keep a crowd pleased. These guys know they have a great album and believe in every note they play.

Working their way through most of the album (9 out of 11 songs), the second half of the show was a look back at their earlier material. In fact, of the last 5 songs, 4 of them were on previous releases. One highlight being a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “The Ghost of Tom Joad” played by Gonzalez alone, also available on the Black Refuge EP. As they closed with “In Every Direction”, I knew the end was near and again, I wanted more. But, after a great show it’s hard to complain and you can’t help but feel like anything is possible. If that’s the case, “You’re the center and you’re always free, in every direction” was a perfect way to the end the night.

1. Amy Winehouse - It's My Party
Earlier this week, Amy Winehouse's cover of Leslie Gore's 1963 hit "It's My Party" leaked and it practically broke twitter. The track is from an upcoming Quincy Jones duet album entitled, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra. I loved Back to Black, but her raspy voice sounds worn out here and the track lacks any sort of soul. Who knows if she'll ever return to form, I hope so. But this is heading in the wrong direction.

2. The Decemberists - Down By The Water
The first single off their new album, The King Is Dead is available for free on their site (or below) right now. The album is due January 18th, making it one of the first releases I'm looking forward to in the new year. I still throw on The Hazards of Love every now and then and can't begin to tell you how much talent this band has.

3. Ben Gibbard/Death Cab For Cutie - New Song
Ben Gibbard recently played a benefit show in Seattle at the Crocodile Cafe and gave us a few treats. With a new Death Cab For Cutie album complete and due in Spring, this song might be on the album. He also brought out his lovely wife Zooey Deschanel for a duet of the Seeker's tune "I'll Never Find Another You". Last week was a strange one. Mostly, because all the news surrounded artists that clearly don't need the attention.

1. Prince - Welcome 2 America Tour
I'm not sure if 5 shows in 2 cities is actually a tour, but Prince pretty much writes his own rules and his "Welcome 2 America" shows have a lot of people talking. All 5 shows (3 in NJ, 2 in NY) will be different and include Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Mint Condition & Sheila E. along with others as guests. At the press conference 2 weeks ago, he actually said "bring some foot spray, because it's gonna be funky." Rumors are circulating that Prince will also hit small clubs every night after the concert, so be on the lookout NJ/NY.

2. Michael Jackson - A very busy, dead guy.
This week Michael Jackson was named the best-selling deceased artist. With the success of "This Is It", his albums still selling, a video game called "Michael Jackson: The Experience and a Thriller movie on the way, this really shouldn't be a surprise. The most interesting piece of news I've heard is that the upcoming holiday release of "unreleased" material is being questioned by the Jackson family. They are claiming the vocals are not his and that Sony is simply trying to make a quick buck.

3. Daft Punk - Tron/Derezzed Video
I'm not sure what it is? Is it a video? Is it a trailer? Is the song really a minute and 40 seconds? One thing is for sure, they really do know how to tease. Oh, and this kicks ass.

Ad Nauseum - G.O.O.D. Music Edition

It may seem as though I'm only following Kanye West and his day to day activities over here, but that's only because him and the rest of G.O.O.D. Music are killing it.

First came the resurrection of Child Rebel Soldier, the supergroup that includes Kanye, Pharrell & Lupe Fiasco. Although the track is 2 years old with references to R. Kelly and Ghostface's "Wallabee", it was unreleased until Mr. West dropped it as part of his G.O.O.D. Friday series. After hearing it, you have to wonder how many other classics this man has just sitting in the studio. You can grab it for FREE on Kanye's blog, including every other release in the series.

Then, he dropped by the 2010 BET Awards and decided the crew was going to drop a cypher that I'm still rewinding to catch all the lines. Not sure if Kanye's line "Too many Urkels on your team, that's why your wins low" or Cyhi da Prynce's "I'm impeccable, they put me on a pedestal, and if you bite me, it's good like a vegetable" is the killer. But, damn if Big Sean didn't just rip his entire verse!

It looks as though Cyhi da Prynce is just getting started because he popped up on the new A-Trak single, "Ray Ban Vision" from the forthcoming Fool's Gold Volume 1. I wish A-Trak would produce more hip-hop, he always finds a beat that is just a step outside the normal crap you hear. Get him and Lil' Wayne in a room and you would have an instant classic.

Oh, and in case you haven't heard, Mos Def just signed to G.O.O.D. Music. Whoa.

1. Gayngs - By Your Side (Sade Cover)
2 weeks ago, I gave you Gayng's version of George Michael's "One More Try" and told you to catch them at the Metro. If I knew they were going to drop this jewel during their set I would have bought you a ticket. It's that good. Making things even better is a studio version that is being offered for free at Daytrotter.com. For those of you unfamiliar with Daytrotter, please take a look at this wonderful site that specializes in acoustic sets from well-deserving indie acts. Listen to me in the future or risk missing something like this.

2. Karen O - If You're Gonna Be Dumb, You Gotta Be Tough
If you thought that was weird and unusual, take a listen to this. Karen O has gone country! The following song is from the forthcoming Jackass 3D soundtrack and debuted on Some Kind of Awesome earlier this week.It can only be assumed the mess at the end is Johnny Knoxville & Co doing what they do best.

3. John Lennon - LENNONYC
Last, but certainly not least is that fact that yesterday would have been John Lennon's 70th birthday. To remember his life and legacy, fans and admirers (Google included) paid their respects this week to a true visionary. A movie about his formative years called "Nowhere Boy" is playing in select cities and seems very interesting. However, it's the documentary "LENNONYC" about his final years in New York City that should not be missed. The film will premiere on PBS, Monday, November 22nd. Couldn't post last week, but it seemed to me like everyone was heading in the same direction: Ok Go's video and Katy Perry getting kicked off Sesame Street. If you missed either of those, you have no pulse.

1. Duck Sauce - Barbara Streisand Video
Duck Sauce (A-Trak & Armand Van Helden) released an EP last year that brought back some disco funk and I totally ate it up. They are set to release a new single and this is the crazy video with too many cameos to mention. If you listen closely, you'll notice a few edits, remixes and additions that really make the song sound better than the original. Check out P-Thugg at 1:30 & DJ Premiere scratching it up right after that! Blink and you might miss Diplo sneaking in/out through the window...

2. Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake - A History of Rap
Jimmy Fallon has been quietly ruling late night. Maybe I'm still pissed about the whole Leno/Conan fiasco, but no one can fuck with Fallon's guests or musical acts. This year I've seen Paul Simon play with the Roots, Phish rock out as part of Rolling Stones week, Cheech & Chong break out the classic "Mexican-Americans" and now this... Watch him every night.

3. Felix Cartal - Fall 2010 Mix
Daily, I hear crap. That isn't a joke. Daily, I dig through emails and search for new stuff. But for the most part everyone is jumping on Dubstep and it's HUGE bass. Like anything there is a place for it, but with it being so trendy, finding a great mix is hard. Leave it up to Felix Cartal to drop something new and incredible. I've been blasting it for the past two days and hope you start your weekend off right. BTW, stay away from Deadmau5's new track "Raise Your Weapon", or try and find it for a prime example of shit my ears hear on the regular.

This week was EASY. I mean, REALLY easy... Here we go.

1. Kanye West - Runaway
Plain and simple, Kanye West is back. I don't think anyone can deny the fact that he is incredibly talented. However, you could make a strong case that some people let fame and money get to their head, turning them into ginormous dickheads. Who would have thought a year after storming the stage, he would debut "Runaway" and be on such a hot streak. The G.O.O.D. Friday series has been killing it and I would be shocked if his album is not the biggest seller of the year. I'll give you the video, you can find the studio version right here. I give credit where credit is due and Flex dropped this exclusively.

2. Third Man Records "Triple Decker Record".
God bless Jack White. The man is trying his best to give fans and vinyl enthusiasts some real treats. This week he invented a new record, or at least an interesting format. The "Triple Decker is a 12" record that has a 7" inside it, literally inside it. You have to crack open the 12" to get to the 7". Only 300 were produced and they are going as high as $500 right now on ebay. Confused? Intrigued? Watch the video below. Also, if you get me one of these for Christmas, I'll love you forever...

3. Gayngs - "One More Try" (ft. Har Mar Superstar)
How do I explain this? Ryan Olson decides to make a band. He calls a bunch of friends, 22 to be exact. They make an album (Relayted, out now on Jagjaguwar) that sounds cheesy and have a prom-themed show in Minneapolis that Prince attends. The indie world is confused and taken back to a world of training bras and roller skates. As if that wasn't enough, they decide to cover George Michael. Want to see this live? They play the Metro at the end of the month. Expect some serious make-out sessions.

Chromeo - Business Casual

For those of you wondering if Chromeo would change their sound with their growing popularity, there is a cowbell literally one second into the album. As comforting as that may seem, it is also the one downfall of their latest release "Business Casual", due out tomorrow. Dave 1 & P-Thugg have easily established themselves as a synthesizer heavy ode to 80's R&B and Funk. Don't get me wrong, they're great at it, I just wish they reached a little farther out of their comfort zone.

In fact, the first 5 songs could easily be on any of their other albums. One song, "Night by Night" was released last year and somehow made it on the album. That's not to say that the beginning of the album is bad. But, the second half is so much better. "When The Night Falls" brings in a female element and a restrained guitar solo at the end that I wish went longer. The second half also has a bit more texture, bringing in strings and a few different tempos. They also continue their fine tradition of making a relationship song that sounds like a long lost theme song. "The Right Type" is "Silver Spoons" meets "Too Close for Comfort" in a good way.

Need something to do for Halloween? They are playing a show at the Congress with A-Trak & Kid Sister. I swear you will not regret it.

1. Kings of Leon - Radioactive
The Kings of Leon might be the newest band to hate (see Stereogum's comments), but they sure know how to make an anthem. Radioactive is the first single from Come Around Sundown, an album written and recorded mostly while touring for the massively successful, Only By The Night. You can pre-order the album now, it is scheduled for release October 19th.

2. Band of Horses play a wedding, seriously.
It seems too good to be true, but here's the story. A wonderful couple (Njal & Elin) attended a show earlier this year. At that show Njal proposed to Elin and as luck would have it, the good guys of Band of Horses were back in town on their wedding day for yet another show. They somehow contact the band, ask them to play and they say "yes". I'll make sure to try that the next time Pearl Jam is in town.

3. Gucci Mane - Gucci Time
At the beginning of the week, this would have easily been #1, but after the intial shock, it sort of lost momentum. This really isn't anything new, more like the final piece of evidence in an air tight case. Hip-Hop has gone electro. Kanye sampled Daft Punk, made a ton of money and everyone followed. At least they snagged a Justice track that will hopefully motivate those guys to put out something new. I really wouldn't mind, but let's get a bit more than a 5 second loop. Have you heard the new Ludacris single? Don't even get me started...

First and foremost, if you are reading this: Thank You. When I initially decided to put this blog together, I had high hopes and so many ideas. Some of them have worked wonderfully, while others have failed to get off the ground. Honestly guys, I didn't think it would be that much work. The idea that if I liked something I could write about it sounded so simple. Yet, if you've followed this blog, the content and my contributions have been spotty, at best.

So how do I fix that? How do I keep you guys coming back? I've got some ideas and a few surprises, so please come back! The first thing I can do is maintain this regularly, so I'm starting a weekly post titled, Ad Nauseum. If you look carefully at Twitter (@theearlynerd) or Facebook, even most music sites you'll see a few stories that won't go away. 3 or 4 items that by the end of the week have dropped on every blog, or should have. Check in at the end of the week and see everything you might have missed, and something it seemed I just couldn't avoid...

#1 - Kanye West - Monster
The talented and apparently generous Kanye West announced via his Twitter account (@kanyewest) that he was introducing "Good Fridays". Every Friday he will release a new song from him or one of his labelmates for free. He also mentioned that he and Jay-Z will release a 5-song EP called "Watch The Throne". Monster got a bunch of hype this week for a few reasons. It got my attention because it features Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, but that is a bit misleading. His vocals are sort of distorted creating a tone much like his other band, Volcano Choir. It seems everyone else went batshit for the Nicki Minaj verse that overshadows everything else. There are so many people on this track, that poor Charlie Wilson didn't even get his name on the cover although he clearly brings up the rear. Let's see if this week's new song "Devil in a New Dress", literally released hours ago will end up here next week.

2. Radiohead - Live in Praha DVD
Contrary to popular belief Radiohead did not invent music, or the internet, or the "album for free" concept. It seems they just get the credit and somehow still make money, they are wise. This week a fan produced DVD of their 2009 show in Praha flooded the internet and again people thought it was brilliant. Truth be told, the idea has been done before by 2 great acts. The Beastie Boys handed out cameras to fans and released "Awesome, I Shot That" years ago and last year a group of Nine Inch Nails fans called thisoneisonus created full shows from videos given to fans for free on the band's site. All three are great and only work because of the great show the band puts on and the adoration from some of the most dedicated fans in the business.

3. Cee-Lo - "Fuck You" Video
Words cannot explain how good this song is, so watch the video. Cee-Lo Green, a founding member of Goodie Mob and the other half of Gnarls Barkley is dropping a solo album, The Lady Killer and this is the first single. How do ensure your song won't be played on the radio between Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, say "Fuck You" 50 times over the span of 4 minutes.

4. Apple - Ping
You have an iPod, an iPhone, maybe even an iPad so what else is missing? A social network, duh. Apple released the latest version of iTunes and bundled with it is the new feature, Ping. As they put it "a social network for music". Create a profile (yes, another damn profile), choose a few album covers to show your music preferences and meet the same damn people you already know. What makes this different is the fact that it does a great job marketing bands. Go to the artist's profile and see tour dates with the option to buy any song. It sure sounds like the end of myspace, considering the huge amount of people already using iTunes and comfortable with making purchases online. Sadly, the artists can only make a page by invitation only leaving a lot bands on the outside looking in. If this gets fixed, the floodgates will open and we may have found a cure for this sagging industry.

Lollapalooza Week - The Black Keys

One of the best things about this blog, is the fact that I have complete freedom over the content I put up. I'm sure you can see that my musical taste varies quite a bit. In some cases I have a pop sensibility (John Mayer & U2), but I can also drop a remix that you wouldn't hear anywhere else but a dark, dark club (Bloody Beetroots & Felix Cartal). Today I give you something from the Eclipse Soundtrack!

Although not a fan, the Twilight movies have given the world some very good music. To do this day I have no idea why Thom Yorke, Vampire Weekend, The Dead Weather & Bon Iver chose to contribute to this project, but I really don't care. The best track from the most recent release is easily The Black Key's "Chop and Change".

The Akron, Ohio duo have found a way to make the bluesy grit and stomp sound refreshingly new. Avid fans of hip-hop as well, even putting out a collaboration record under the name, Blakroc. They really now how to keep a hook tight and where to still find room for some honesty and emotion. I wish I knew who was singing in the background because it absolutely makes the song. I shiver every time I hear "C'mon, C'mon, C'mon".

They will be hitting the stage Friday at 6 on the Budweiser stage. Even better would be catching them at the SOLD OUT after show, Saturday night at the Metro. I've seen these guys twice already and could not begin to explain how great they sound...

Chromeo do practically everything right. Their brand of Electro/Funk/Pop is as exciting as it sounds. The Montreal duo (Dave 1 & P-Thugg) make party-starting music by embracing influences most of us would be embarrassed to even mention. I mean they just played a full set at Bonnaroo with Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates)! One minute they are making something as bubblegum as "Momma's Boy" and the next they are getting remixes from MSTRKRFT & Boy 8-Bit.

They are set to release a new album "Business Casual" on September 14th and you have two chances to see them. They will play the Adidas Mega Stage at 7, or for you night owls a DJ set at Sound-Bar. Get tickets to the after show here.

Lollapalooza Week - Chiddy Bang

I would consider Chiddy Bang a pretty unknown hip-hop duo, unless you like indie beats sprinkled over some serious flow. The Philadelphia duo (Proto & Xaphoon) created a bit of buzz a while back as they sampled MGMT, Passion Pit and even Radiohead. The funny thing is, I think they might have done pretty well just creating beats and losing the gimmick. It does get old after a while. Nevertheless, they have dropped two mix tapes (The Swelly Express & Air Swell) and should be a real change of pace at Lollapalooza. Check them out at Perry's on Sunday at 3:30.

In case you didn't know this blog is coming to you from Chicago. That being said, I will always love and attend Lollapalooza. I actually started this last year in an attempt to get you some good music and also let you know which acts I'll definitely be seeing. For the next 5 days, please come back for more music and artist info.

I'm sure you have all heard of Phoenix. Even if I am somehow your only outlet for new music, we've already had 2 posts for these guys because they are that awesome. Some people may say that they don't deserve to be a closer (Saturday @ the Budweiser Stage), but I'd pick them any day over Green Day. Even though I have seen them twice already and have tickets to the after show @ the House of Blues (jealous?), I will be battling to get to the front.

I've been sitting on this remix for a few months now. Contrary to what you might think, I still keep a few nuggets for myself. Even better is the fact that it's actually from their older album, something I'm sure a few people have never even heard. So enjoy and try and find me this weekend if you happen to be in this wonderful town for 3 crazy days.

Introducing: Villagers

Although it would be safe to assume that Villagers would be a group, or at least 2 people, it is not. Villagers is in fact one very talented man, Conor J O'Brien. The Irish born singer/songwriter mixes elements of folk, indie pop and sun-drenched, hazy awesomeness. His shows in the US have been rare and limited to the coasts until now. He'll be in town playing Schubas in September and it would be a crime if you didn't drop $12 to see him. Although I don't see him becoming a certified phenomenon, it seems as though he's getting some wind in his sails and that makes me happy. His first single, "Becoming A Jackal" is doing so well, the video is FREE this week on iTunes. Check out the second single, "Ship Of Promises" recorded live in his apartment which seems about the same size as Schuba's, See you guys there...

New Ray Lamontagne - Beg, Steal or Borrow

Ray LaMontagne will release his 4th album, God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise on August 17th and I have his first single. The slow chugging "Beg, Steal or Borrow" is more of the same: Ray's scruffy voice and acoustic guitar, some slide guitar for layers and a simple beat to keep the song moving. I am bit interested to hear the rest of the album because Ray chose to produce this record himself, leaving his regular producer Ethan Johns behind.

Even more exciting is the double bill of David Gray & Ray LaMontagne that will play a string of dates this summer. For a complete list of dates go here. New Bright Eyes song for The Sound Strike

First and foremost if you don't check out TwentyFourBit regularly, you should. It is definitely one of the best music blogs out there and constantly filled with great news like this.

Conor Oberst & Co. (aka Bright Eyes) are contributing a new song titled "Coyote Song" to the organization The Sound Strike, which is trying to call attention to Arizona's embarrassing SB 1070 Immigration Law. Many artists including Rage Against The Machine, Kanye West, Sonic Youth & Massive Attack have vowed not to play a single note in Arizona. Even better news is that most artists will be contributing songs to the project where fans can download and support the cause. No word on when the song or video will be available, but the video below has definitely got me excited. Disclaimer: The song playing in the background is NOT the new material, instead "Road to Joy" off the fantastic "I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning"

Official 2010 Lollapalooza Aftershows

Lollapalooza announced this year's lineup for official aftershows taking place at local venues in Chicago. Phoenix, The National, The Black Keys & Devo are among the acts and even better,they've added a few new venues to the mix.

Phoenix seems to be the big draw this year, packing them into the tiny House of Blues with reasonably priced tickets! A special presale starts tomorrow at 10am, password: tickets.

Alliances will be made as concertgoers will have to choose between The National and The Black Keys, both releasing great albums recently and sadly, both playing Saturday night. I'm choosing The Black Keys in hopes they and brilliant openers, The Morning Benders demolish the Metro.

If you're looking for even smaller venues, Rogue Wave at Schuba's should get nice and sweaty. Health at Reggie's Rock Club is definitely "Enter At Your Own Risk". That place is small, but so glad they added it to the list this year. Lincoln Hall also gets introduced this year hosting The Big Pink, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Blitzen Trapper.

If it's dance you want, hit up the Congress Theater for Hot Chip & Rusko. Unless Perry's tent gets a major makeover, I can't see Rusko's show coming anywhere near the damage he pulled at Coachella this year. His lights and energy might get lost during the day, but indoors and late night seems just right for him. Check out his new video in case you haven't found his album, O.M.G.!. Get Two Awesome New Releases For Free: A-Trak & Junip

I know what you're thinking: Isn't most music already free? The short answer is, not legally. Recently bands have decided to give away a song for free or after hearing that their album has leaked, the ability to stream an entire album. But very few artists give away an entire album for free. This week, A-Trak and Junip did just that and they are fantastic.

A-Trak has been on the scene since winning the 1997 DMC World DJ Championship. He was 15 years old, no joke. Now running Fool's Gold Records with Nick Catchdubs and producing for Kid Sister and Lupe Fiasco, he has been busy to say the least. This guy can do it all and has; from DJ'n for Kanye West to rocking WMC with Armand Van Helden as the duo, Duck Sauce. Jump on Hype Machine for a dizzying amount of remixes, my favorite being his remix of Boys Noize "Oh!". This week he dropped via his twitter (@atrak) account the second volume of his Dirty South Dance series and it has been on repeat since then. The complete opposite of being everywhere is being nowhere and taking 10 years to release your formal debut. Junip is that band. Formed in 2000, this Swedish group has released a total of 11 songs in 10 years but they are well worth it. I first caught their Black Refuge EP after hearing their version of Springsteen's "Ghost of Tom Joad". This week they released the Rope and Summit EP and have promised a full length album this summer. Even better they are touring this summer with a stop at Lincoln Hall next month so it looks like things are starting to pick up for the slow moving indie folk trio. So as everything in life, the music industry is cyclical. Do you remember Diddy and Kanye sampling Diana Ross and Chaka Khan? How about the nostalgia of pretty much any 90's band reuniting and touring in the last couple of years? Even better, the recent influx of keyboards and synths to make everything sound like the soundtrack from a John Hughes' movie? Hell, even albums are coming back, actual vinyl. I guess it was only a matter of time before the music video became old and somehow new again. With Mtv removing the "music television" from their programming and logo, artists can make videos and easily place them on their website. Two weeks ago, Band of Horses gave away their newest video. Erykah Badu got ass naked in Dallas for her new song. My how things have changed... So here is my version of 120 Minutes, 4 videos for you to check out because you're not going to get them anywhere else. A channel that plays ONLY music videos, now you're just being ridiculous.

Ben Bridwell & Band of Horses Wander With a Broken Heart

Band of Horses' latest release "Infinite Arms" is quite a surprise, with subtle changes to their sound while making their most cohesive record to date. Gone are the building epics that fans are used to (Is There A Ghost, The Funeral), and for the most part so is anything with a upbeat tempo. The opener "Factory" lays the groundwork for the album with aspects continuously appearing later on. One that is unmistakable is the mention of specific locations or the idea of traveling. We find ourselves in hotels, apartments, speaking of log cabins and the difference between a house and a home. A catalog of places that we've found to escape or get over a relationship gone wrong. It's obvious that somewhere on this journey, a relationship that lasted too long has finally given up.

This is where Band of Horses is at their best. Ben Bridwell has a voice that oozes emotion and regret. Two highlights are "Blue Beard" and "Evening Kitchen", the latter being as blatantly honest as Death Cab for Cutie's "The Ice is Getting Thinner" about the inevitability of the end... "And if you're ever left with any doubt/What you live with and what you'll do without/I'm only sorry that it took so long to figure out". "Blue Beard" is by far the best song of the album, a song filled with questions and very little answers. A song that finds comfort in the words "I don't know". That might be the beauty of the record. Knowing that you reached the end, but something else is on the horizon. At no point does the album drag you down, instead it just lets you know that everyone goes through this, just not as beautifully sounding as this band.

Infinite Arms is out May 18th, and the band is opening for Pearl Jam on a few Midwest dates. I'll be front and center at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Indianapolis next week. Check out the album preview below and please catch them if you can.

Compared to the letter B, this one was not only enjoyable, but very comforting. I started this project thinking that I may have lost my way with music. With music so accessible and in most cases free, I have the tendency to hear about a band and then find a copy for instant gratification. So over the past few years, my collection has ballooned and my hope was to revisit old tunes and remove things I never actually enjoyed. The problem is; that I really haven't removed anything. But, I can sleep at night knowing I actually enjoy every note of music on my ipod.

The first artist I want to talk about is Cake. Despite their knack for finding infectious guitar riffs, most people would think of them as a novelty act. A band that had some success in the 90's only to disappear into oblivion. But they are not Harvey Danger, or Barenaked Ladies, or Fastball. Chances are you have a copy of "Fashion Nugget", but have you ever really listened to "Motorcade of Generosity"? There are some very good songs on that album, notably "Ruby Sees All", "Mr. Mastodon Farm" and my favorite, "Jolene". The funky jangle riff just kills me every time.

Chromeo caught my eye last year at Lollapalooza. I had a copy of "Fancy Footwork" and totally wore that out. Initially I thought the sound and nostalgia of keyboards and synthesizers would get old, but it didn't. Whether they want to be categorized as Pop, they really are. Simply put, they grew up on 80's music and instead of calling it lame (like most people would) they do their best to fill every minute with hooks and lyrics that will make you want to dance and call your girlfriend from 8th grade. A new album should be out this summer, so check them out.

Last but not least is a band that I've listened to for a very long time, Counting Crows. Thankfully, through the years they have continued to put out really great music and even better shows. My first show was in Kansas City for the "Recovering the Satellites" tour and after I realized they were in fact playing songs I liked, just different versions, I was hooked. It's hard to explain, but never go to a Counting Crows show expecting to sing along, you will be incredibly embarrassed. Adam Duritz just has his clock set to something different, something more honest. I never knew the meaning to most of my favorite songs until I saw them live. The one line you missed, or never paid attention to because you were screaming at the top of your lungs is right there in front of your face. Please, please, please go see them this summer. For those in Chicago, they'll be playing Ravinia on August 21st, see ya there.

When I took on this project, I really never realized how much music I actually have. Almost 3000 songs for one letter is crazy by any stretch of the imagination. I know some people who have an iphone or nano and seem to get by without a care holding 5000 songs total. Thankfully, this letter was one of the larger ones and C looks like a cake walk compared to what I just went through. In fact, I'm almost halfway through it, so stay tuned.

I refuse to believe that I can write ANYTHING about The Beatles that hasn't been said before, but 2 things struck me as I listened to their entire catalog. First off, if you have not purchased or heard the new remastered versions that were released last year, you are missing out. Ever since the invention of the MP3, digital music has managed to compress and clog a lot of the sound that you would normally hear on a cd or vinyl album. Even worse is the fact that few people realize this. A beautiful song like "Here Comes The Sun" sounds so clear and warm, never overpowering you or losing its' crystal clear guitar. I heard new instruments, strings, minor keys that let me hear the song for the first time. The second surprise was their most recent release "Love" which was created for the Cirque De Soleil show of the same name. There is no new material on the album, instead a mix of 26 songs that cover their entire career. The courage and talent of George Martin and his son, Giles should be commended as they produced this release and really take you on a trip through some of the greatest music ever made.

I've been a fan of Bright Eyes for a real long time. Conor Oberst has attempted to move on to other projects, but this was his baby and if you've never heard them, you need to. As I dug through the albums and EP's I was amazed it his amount of material and how much was still good. While I was listening to the old material, I received some good news. Although the band had said they would not continue to make new music, a re-issue of the split EP "One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels" is due at the end of this month with 4 new songs. I may have been raised on Motown and Classic Rock, but I've always been amazed by artist who can tell a story with great lyrics and a simple acoustic guitar. I don't know if there is anyone better at that then Conor Oberst. This might not get you running for the record store, but it's my favorite song, so sad and honest...

In twenty years, I'll still be listening to the Beatles and Bright Eyes. One of those is probably obvious, but the other is exactly why I started this blog.

John Mayer - Milwaukee 3.1.08

John Mayer's recent tour for Battle Studies will not hit Chicago until April, so I had to hop on the road and catch it in Milwaukee. Throughout the tour, he has played an average of 6 new songs which really had me wondering what was going to be left out. It seems if you are looking for anything from Heavier Things you might be disappointed. The only track played last night was Bigger Than My Body. Suprisingly, his first album still has some life in it and the crowd ate them up, especially 3x5 with Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire as an intro. Every show has started with Heartbreak Warfare and judging from the merchandise booth, he's going to stick with that for a while.

This show was my 7th, and it really does rank up there due to a few factors. First and foremost were my seats, I was 5th row, slightly to the left. Being that close I often found myself staring at his guitar or drummer, Steve Jordan. Second, was the songs and little changes he made to them instead of playing the album, only louder. Steve Jordan's drum intro to Waiting On The World To Change just shakes the foundation. Half of My Heart ended with bits and pieces of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide. The closer, Gravity ended the night perfectly with Buddy Guy's I Got Dreams To Remember wrapping up what would already be considered a great show. But, the cherry on top was a NEW song that will make this night unforgettable. Let's call it "Everything You'll Ever Be" and it is fantastic. Only 39 days until the show in Chicago, see you there...

So the 1st single (Stylo ft. Mos Def) was ok, at best. Which really got me wondering about the Gorillaz new album, Plastic Beach. But yesterday, they leaked another track that is so much fun. From the 80's cartoon beginning to the slinky beat, it will be a song I blast as soon as the weather gets above 50. De La Soul team up again, along with a little help from Gruff Rhys (of the Super Furry Animals).

Beach House, the duo of Victoria Legrand and Alex Scally just released their 3rd album Teen Dream on Sub Pop last month and it's very good. Their brand of spaced out indie pop has been praised by critics for a while now and rightfully so. Recently they have hit a bit of a hot streak making appearances on Jimmy Fallon and a coveted session with Daytrotter. It won't get a party started, but will definitely make a lazy day feel like heaven.

Smashing Pumpkins' "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope" Project Begins

Despite the fact that Billy Corgan is the only original member in the current version of Smashing Pumpkins. The new lineup has taken on quite a project. According to the website, the band has plans to issue a 44 song album for free. The album, titled "Teargarden By Kaleidyscope" is based on the Fool's Journey in the progress of the Tarot with four main characters/stages: The Child, The Fool, The Skeptic & The Mystic. They have already posted 2 songs (A Song For A Son, Widow Wake My Mind) on their website, and below. True to his word, the songs are free with no strings attached. You don't have to enter any information or join any mailing list. So grab them...

For those who would like to eventually buy the album, the plan so far is to issue limited edition 4 song EPs, making for a total of 11 EPs when they are finally done. Also, a boxed set will be available as well, but I think we're getting a bit ahead of ourselves, they still have 42 songs to complete. Keep checking the site, as they hope to release a song a month. I'm not really that impressed with the 2 songs so far, but being from Chicago I refuse to lose faith in a band that was so fantastic when I was growing up.

Albums to Hear in 2010

As promised here are 10 albums I'm looking forward to in the coming months. Most of them have release dates and titles, but some are so fresh I can only tell you it's coming.

1. Band of Horses - Night Rainbows
Of all the artists on this list, Band of Horses is the one shrouded in the most secrecy, which in turn makes it the most anticipated. From their stellar debut "Everything All The Time" to the sophomore effort "Cease to Begin" I have been amazed at their talent. While touring this past summer lead singer Ben Bridwell introduced new material while mentioning that the songs were from a new album titled "Night Rainbows". Despite rumors that the album is in fact done, there is no info on the band's site or from their label, Sub Pop.

2. Gorillaz - Plastic Beach
Never trust a lead singer, I don't care who it is (Trent Reznor, I'm looking in your direction). After Damon Albarn declared he was moving past the animated project, news came of a new album with some serious guests (Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Mos Def). The first single, "Stylo" will be released later this month with the album scheduled for 3/9/10. The band has sold over 15 million albums due to the fact that they can blend a bunch of genres, so expect anything. Those with free time on their hands, dig through their site for games, music and so much more.

3. My Chemical Romance - TBD
MCR have promised a true rock album, leaving behind the punk of their early work and the conceptual aspects of "The Black Parade". To prove they mean it, they are currently working with Brendan O'Brien who has produced Pearl Jam, Rage Against the Machine & Mastodon. A few months ago the band hit LA for a few shows debuting songs "Death Before Disco" & "Black Dragon Fighting Society". You can find the footage on Youtube, it's definitely a strong start.

4. The Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee
Prior to Adam Yauch announcing his battle with cancer, this album was finished, titled and even given a release date of last September. I remember watching them on Jimmy Fallon and counting the days until Lollapalooza where they were scheduled to play. The good news is that Adam has gotten better, even sending out emails about his progress. Even better would be a release date and tour, think of it as a "Got Well" world tour.

5. The Dead Weather - TBD
If you read my best of '09 post, you'd already know about the pending release. Want a sneak peak? Sign up for Third Man Record's Vault subscription and you'll receive TWO new songs "No Horse" and "Jawbreaker". The catch, it'll cost you $60 and it's a vinyl only release. I guess asking for a Numark TT turntable for Christmas was a pretty good idea after all...

6. She & Him - Volume 2
The Duo of M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel are back again with a collection of folk lullabies. Expect bigger and better. M. Ward had a pretty good 2009 with "Hold Time" and "Monsters of Folk", really maturing and evolving. Given the acclaim of the first album, let's hope Zooey takes a few more chances as well. A full track listing is up for the March 23rd release.

7. Broken Bells - Self Titled
The collaboration between Danger Mouse and James Mercer (of the Shins)recently gave away the first single "The High Road" and it immediately started a buzz. It seems as though Danger Mouse can do no wrong, bouncing from Gnarls Barkley to Beck to the Black Keys with unparallelled success. Let's hope the streak continues as some wonder what exactly Mercer has been doing with his time. Mercer's main project the Shins have been "working" on a new album, but last year Mercer replaced 2 original members and nothing else has really been said about the band's future.

8. Coheed & Cambria - Year of the Black Rainbow
Claudio Sanchez and the rest of the band made an announcement in December that the new album would be a prequel of sorts to the ongoing saga their fan base has grown to love. If you are a fan, you would know that all of their material is based on a futuristic galactic tale starting with the 2 characters "Coheed" and "Cambria", the parents of the hero, Claudio. Without going into the story, think "The Matrix meets Star Wars". The new album will address the origins of our hero and hopefully his parent's role in the expanding plot. They are releasing (tentatively April) a deluxe edition that includes a 300 page novel which means I will be reading an ACTUAL book this year.

9. Rogue Wave - Permalight
This California band has been on my radar since their contribution to the "Just Friend's" Soundtrack. Their song "Eyes" was exactly what you would expect from a west coast band, light and fluffy. However, instead of relying on that, they press a bit outside of the box and stretch the boundaries of their melodies. I do have some questions regarding them leaving Sub Pop for the Jack Johnson founded Brushfire, but the first single "Good Morning" is promising. Chicago people, catch them @ Lincoln Hall April 17th.

10. Hot Chip - One Life Stand
These guys have never released a bad album, or song for that matter. However, it is an acquired taste. British electropop doesn't always go over well in the states, I don't know why?!? I could listen to "Over and Over" over and over again which I think was the intended result. 2008's "Made in the Dark" was just as contagious with "Ready for the Floor" hitting every club in the world. The album is scheduled for release on March 9th, and a show @ the Riviera April 19th.

*BONUS RUMOR*
Despite releasing "Battle Studies" only two months ago, if I was a betting man I might look for new material in 2010 from John Mayer. He has tweeted that "the next album is closer than you think", recently played 2 shows with his blues outfit, John Mayer Trio and replaced his touring drummer with Steve Jordan leaving 2/3 of the trio to travel the world on tour this year. Add to that the fact that JM3's website has "New John Mayer Trio Website Coming Soon" and you have some blues in your future... maybe.

Vampire Weekend's new album "Contra" is streaming right now, right HERE!!! I've been listening to it for the last couple of days and it's more of the same, but better. Recorded in California, the tone is more international and less indie punk. Even better news is that they will play a show at the Riviera on March 25th. A special VW presale starts tomorrow @ 10am, I think the presale is CONTRA, but don't quote me. There will also be an XRT presale starting Friday and the general onsale Saturday.

As you may or may not have read, this post will be the first of a 26-part project tentively called "the alphabet project". In an effort to reduce my current audio library and to review some of the older material, I have decided to listen to my ipod in alphabetical order. After completing the letter A, I can tell you this is going to be hard work and take a long time...

The Stats:

The first highlight was Angus Young and his terribly underated skills, especially during the opening disc of Ac/Dc's Bonfire box set. Originally recorded for a weekly radio program at Atlantic Records, the group is young and full of fight. This is also the Ac/Dc they intended it to be with original lead singer, Bon Scott. Some guitarists may be better techinically, or have faster fingers, but Angus is king of the dirty riff.

About a year ago, I stumbled on to an acoustic cover of Daft Punk's "Digital Love" by the Danish band, Alphabeat. I can't tell you how often I find one song that I like while bouncing from site to site. The only problem is that they often get lost next to the 25,000 other songs. The original version of Digital Love has always been my favorite track from Discovery, but my major complaint was the sound. Compared to the other songs, it's too low and sort of stays in the background. But this version had feeling, had a pop, had completely turned the song on its' head. They took a love song and gave it a heart.

As I listened to Aretha Franklin the room became a cathedral, the winter air warmed up a bit and I was taken back to the Saturdays of my youth, doing chores and listening to music with my Ma. Every year there is some new girl with a voice, but no one can replace the range and power of Aretha Franklin. I found a very good song while digging through her catalog that has inspired another post, so stay tuned.

As much as I wish I could give every artist I listened to a bit of the spotlight, these artists pushed their way to the front. I'm already knee deep into B, but it's full of bands with large catalogs (The Beatles, Bright Eyes, Black Sabbath) so please be patient. Top 5 Albums of the Year

As 2009 comes to a close, I hope the year was a good one for you. Thank you very much for checking out the blog, I hope you found something you liked and keep reading. After much deliberation and procrastination, I have come up with my top 5 albums of the year. Drum roll please...

5. Miike Snow - Miike Snow
The electronic trio released the self-titled debut in September and gained some airplay from the first single, "Animal". They can easily be this year's Peter Bjorn & John, which isn't that bad when you are a side project. Given their success, they may record again, but I doubt it, so scoop this up. If you like the vocals, check out Fires of Rome (Andrew Wyatt sings for both groups) and search for Bloodshy & Avant's production skills or remixes (the other 2 talented men of this group).

4. The Dead Weather - Horehound
Equal parts of The White Stripes, The Kills, Queens of the Stone Age & The Greenhornes this group took the greatness of each member and scorched everything in their way. Released in July on Third Man Records, the group was formed as another side project of Jack White, this time showcasing his skills behind the drum kit. Although most people would prefer to see Jack on guitar and singing, Alison Mosshart was a breath of fresh air and electrifying on stage (I caught them @ the Vic this year). Expect another album Spring of '10.

3. Mos Def - The Ecstatic
If there was a "Comeback of the Year" award, the mighty Mos Def would have received this honor as well. After the dreadful "Tru Magic" most people thought he was losing his focus with his attempts to break into acting. Maybe he heard this, because The Ecstatic is rough, confident and banging. Check out "Quiet Dog" or "Casa Bey" for tracks only Mos Def could release and I thank him for doing so.

2. Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
This could have been the year of Andrew Bird, but the Kings Of Leon and my #1 band stole some of the spotlight, and rightfully so. On his past albums there were points of absurdity and loss of focus which can be attributed and forgiven due to his immense talent. This time he manages to stay the course and seamlessly blend the album into a flowing mixture of sounds and emotion. I drove all the way to Colorado this summer to see this man and I'd do it again. For those of you looking for a challenge, try the limited edition double album "Noble Beast/Useless Creatures" for a second album of instrumentals and fragments. It's a brief peek behind the curtain.

1. Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
You can catch these guys everywhere because they have been EVERYWHERE. Despite very little popularity in the states, this French band reinforced my belief that good music will find it's way to the masses. The album is flawless with every track worthy of being a single and DJs took notice. Take a spin around Hype Machine and you could get dizzy at the amount of remixes out there for every song. "Lisztomania" may start the party but "Love Like a Sunset" and "Countdown" keep it going.

Who knows what will happen next, but I think I have a pretty good idea. Come back next week for the "Albums of 2010" post and my first blog of the "Alphabet Project". Be safe and thanks again for reading, it was a damn good year...

Eddie Vedder @ the Kennedy Center Honors

Last night CBS broadcasted the Kennedy Center Honors, a show that honored Bruce Springsteen among others. The night started with a tribute to Robert De Niro and an amazing musical number for fellow honoree (and genius) Mel Brooks. But like most things he does, Bruce and his music stole the show. Well-respected artists stepped up to contribute to the night (John Mellencamp, Ben Harper, Melisa Etheridge & Sting) and long time friend and fan, Eddie Vedder dug deep and performed "City of Ruins". I'm not sure how many people have encountered this dilemma and it may sound absurd to a few. But, I am only 8 gigs short of maxing out my current iPod. When I bought the 160 gig model, I never imagined that I would fill it. However, with the accessibility of torrents my library seemed to double over night! That being said, no one really needs this much music. In fact, you probably only listen to a few artists with the rest just taking up space. The only question is: What do I get rid of? As I scroll through the artists, that question gets heavier and heavier.

So in an act of utter stupidity I have come to a very democratic and time consuming conclusion. I will actually listen to every song/album/artist I own. If it sucks, it's gone. Do I really need Bishop Allen's "October EP", or Matt Pond PA's "Measure"? My hope is to have a leaner, kickass iPod at my disposal and enough room to continue to find and enjoy new music. So let's begin...

1. I will listen to them alphabetically. The first artist is A-Trak, up next Ac/Dc, followed by Adam Ant, etc.
2. Because I appreciate the idea/concept of the "album" I will listen to the album in it's entirety as it was intended to be heard.

Occasionally you find an artist or band that is cool no matter what. For everyone who thinks it's about the "music", yes it is. But being a rock star has such an exotic flare, you can't deny that you didn't jump off your bed with a broom in hand thinking you were shredding a solo. Some bands seem to roll into popularity with the trends (ahem, the Strokes), while others stay the same and that makes them popular. Dave Grohl, and practically everything he associates himself with, has endured and persevered to make some fantastic music. Who else can claim ushering in the grunge movement (Nirvana), tackling classic rock (he was the touring drummer for Tom Petty shortly after Nirvana ended), introducing stoner rock to the masses (his drumming on Queens of the Stone Age's "Songs for the Deaf" is phenomenal), accurately defining the term Supergroup (see Them Crooked Vultures) and ruling the pop charts and Mtv audience (Foo Fighters)? Simply put, the guy can do know wrong...

Introducing: Drummer

Drummer is the newest side project of Patrick Carney (drummer for the Black Keys). Their debut album "Feel Good Together" started shortly after Dan Auerbach (guitarist/vocalist for the Black Keys) embarked on a solo tour to support his latest album, Keep It Hid. The name of the band is taken from the fact that ALL members are currently drummers in another band. Stepping a bit out of their comfort zone each member has taken on a new instrument, except Gregory Boyd who plays drums on the album to make a wonderfully indie pop album. Although no future dates are posted on their site, I hope they will continue to make music because the album is great beginning to end. "Feel Good Together" is their first video and a good sample of the rest of the album.

If you haven't had a chance to catch Andrew Bird on tour supporting his critically acclaimed album Noble Beast, you are in for a real treat. In the holiday spirit, he will play three shows at the Fourth Presbyterian Church next month. General on sale is this Saturday @ 10am, with a presale starting tomorrow @ 10am. Because I'm a nice guy and absolutely love his work (I drove to Colorado to see him play Red Rocks with Death Cab for Cutie), I would encourage everyone to catch this show. The presale code is "cozy". Tickets are relatively cheap, from $20 for general admission and $40 for prime seating. I do have to warn you though, this will be an instrumental show. So if you enjoy his work and are hoping for a few of your favorite tunes, you are out of luck. That being said, he is still a briliant musician capable of some awe inspiring moments with his violin. Plus, how often do you get to see a concert in a church, or even go to church? You bunch of sinners...

Last month he recorded two shows that will be compiled into a dvd some time next year. Among the highlights were "Fitz & Dizzyspells", "On Ho > Oh No", a new track called "La Lucitania" and my favorite "Anonanimal". Ben Gibbard & Jay Farrar @ Lincoln Hall

Ben Gibbard & Jay Farrar played tracks from their recent collaboration, the Jack Kerouac inspired, "One Fast Move or I'm Gone" to a sold out crowd at Lincoln Hall last night. The two met after contributing to the new Kerouac movie of the same title. The pair decided to make 12 songs based exclusively on Kerouac's work and the result is dark folk album with occasional shades of country and blues. Opening with "California Zephyr" the mood was set early as an attentive audience let the band accent and expand the material. Throughout the set, both singers split vocal duties and hopped onto keyboards when needed. Despite both being accomplished artists, the secret weapon of the night was in fact Mark Spencer who played a gorgeous slide guitar and spooky keyboard during "Breathe Our Iodine", the chugging, gritty highlight of the show. Being a huge fan of Ben (and Death Cab For Cutie) I was ecstatic when he chose to add "An Open Letter" to the set, a hidden gem he wrote with Styrofoam.

As far as the venue, Lincoln Hall showed the growing pains of a place that has been open for only 2 weeks. Although I would definitely purchase tickets to another act there, it does come with a disclaimer. If you choose to see a band perform there, get there early and on the floor. The second floor is nothing more than a railing around the top with limited viewing at best. It got so disappointing and crowded, some people chose to leave the show after not being admitted to the floor and unable to see from the second floor. At one point I was told that if I went to the bathroom, which is outside the floor area, that I might not be permitted back inside. Thankfully a manager came over and did his best to assist people trying to get back to friends, but it lead to a few headaches and complaints. I kind of have to wonder if the owners of Schuba's may have bitten off more than they can chew by trying to make an upgraded edition of Schuba's. The stage was awkwardly large which lost a bit of the intimacy, but I'm sure the venue will eventually find its' image and atmosphere.

The Bloody Beetroots Get A Deadly Remix Just In Time For Halloween

The Bloody Beetroots recently released Romborama and have been remixing tracks for a couple of years now. The Italian duo of Bobby Rifo and Tommy Tea formed in 2006, releasing albums through the always cool, Dim Mak Records. Similar to Justice or MSTRKRFT, the beats are very aggressive. After seeing them crush the DJ tent at Lollapalooza this year, I've kept my eye on them and you should too. I have no info on the guy who cut this remix, but he took a great song and made it even tougher. Download it now and immediately toss it into your Halloween mix...

Claudio Sanchez Unleashes "Kill Audio"

Claudio Sanchez, lead singer of Coheed & Cambria just released his second comic book series and this one seems to be getting a lot of good reviews. Kill Audio is a 6 issue series following the adventures of our hero, Claudio.

For those of you not familiar with Coheed & Cambria, all of the group's material is based on The Amory Wars. The story is ridiculously elaborate, taking place in a large solar system named Heaven's Gate. "Coheed" and "Cambria" are the mother and father of Claudio, a savior for the war torn galaxy. Some people have talked about it's similarities to Star Wars, but I found that if you listen to the music and read the comics it works very well. FYI, Coheed & Cambria (the band) are hard at work in the studio making a new album based on a prequel to The Amory Wars, so this could get very confusing. However they have promised to release a series of comics in chronological order to tell the story further.

One character from The Amory Wars is Jesse "The Prize Fighter" Inferno which has lead to the creation of a new band called? The Prize Fighter Inferno! Taking away most of the progressive rock and punk in their other band, this one tends to lean more on electronic beats. All of this is quite meaningless if you either hate Coheed & Cambria or hate comics, but I love both so check out any of the music or art and enjoy the trailer for Kill Audio below, featuring music from The Prize Fighter Inferno. Just so you know, the stories do not have any relation, nor do the intersect so you can pick up a comic from this series without wondering if you missed anything. Volcano Choir - "Island, IS" Video

As I patiently wait for the webcast of Bon Iver's set from this year's Austin City Limit Music Festival to start, I can't stop listening to this track from Volcano Choir's "Unmap". A collaboration between the talented Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) and members of the group Collection of Colonies of Bees, the first single is a good representation of the full album. Please don't expect anything as lyrically honest as Bon Iver's "For Emma, Forever Ago". Volcano Choir manage to say very little, using Justin's voice as just another instrument in a very lush and atmospheric tone. Also, don't expect any live dates soon with both bands having an already booked schedule. That might also be the reason for no actual members being in the video, instead something reminiscent of the classic game Simon.
